Cooper Kupp on routes on air with intent… You know what we used to call that? Deja Vu.. -Edelman. “Because once you know what’s coming, that’s when techniques and your superpowers get to come out” -Edelman “Unconscious competence.” -Sean McVay I’m sure some sports scientist somewhere has a problem with this line of thinking. I tend to side with elite athletes who are students of the game and put the work into understanding the game holistically when they articulate things. 🤷🏻

The obstacle is the way. No defender should ever dictate the depth of your route. Make them chase you!

Young WRs should be paying attention to what @49ers vet WR Chris Conley is doing tonight. Main reason why former third-rounder is in his eighth season (with fifth different team) because of his willingness to embrace and excel on ST. Great lesson for those willing to take notice.

Kyle Shanahan was asked if Jauan Jennings was the most ferocious run-blocking WR he’s ever coached: “Probably. What he did driving that guy into the Gatorade is what he does every day at practice. Our defense tried to fight him last year because they thought he was going above and beyond.”

- Hard vert. stem w/ no indicators - Proactive near arm as he breaks DB’s cushion - Violent trigger + pulls the opposite leg thru…remains in-frame, heel-to-toe contact, etc. - Finishes with the throw-by & clears secondary contact w/ opposite arm TOR footwork is not sacrificed!!

You win with your feet…the hands finish the job! Great visual from #Ravens WR Zay Flowers on the Bench route.

- Proactive hands + gets width to avoid contact - Digs out of it to separate; eyes up not back for the 🏈 - Underthrown ball = play up and through the DB - Violent pull-back to create Ball-Me-Defender relationship…give the DB your back!

#Browns WR Cedric Tillman winning on the Sluggo. Run the first route first. Body language wins! - 3 vertical strides; foot in the ground + head around - Everything says Slant: eyes to QB + whole body committed inside…routes on air mentality!

Grab him, pull him, leave him. Vertical stem + eyes to the DB to grab him. Burst crossfield + eyes away to pull him. DB stays on the high hip = exit flat to leave him. The art of pairing routes together… @JahanDotson

Elijah Moore Vertical Stem Eat cushion & force the DB to turn and run. No indicators…everything says GO (open stride, clean arm action, forward body lean). Pad level never changes. You win with your feet…the hands finish the job. “Everything’s a vertical until it’s not.”

Davante Adams winning on the Post vs. an off & inside CB 🔑: eventually the DB HAS to respect us going vertical - FA = eat cushion ASAP - Burst into the blind spot to force the DB to turn & run - Slip the hip and dig to separate - Eyes up not back for the 🏈 - Grab the rebound

- Sudden and violent: no indicators! Don’t ride the DB’s back with your hand. - Bring both hands to the party: near arm = throw-by / far arm = clears the defender - Aiming point: Hipped (no hands-on) = back plate / Arm bar (off-hand jam) = elbow. 2/2

THROW-BY CUTUP 🔑’s - Sell vertical: must force the DB to turn and run! - Keep the DB close: we want to take leverage at the TOR. Further away = more distance to travel + weaker contact (if any) - Win with your feet: do not sacrifice your footwork. The hands finish the job! 1/2

Three 🔑‘s: - Remain in-frame: Consistent stride length to maintain speed. - Get both feet in the ground: DB must feel you pull away (weight transfer)! - Head ‘n Shoulders: Finishes the job! Everything works in-sync with your lower body.

DOUBLE STICK (vs. trail defender) CUTUP Effective separation technique to win at the TOR. Consecutive sticks creating a violent hip shift to sell opposite. Primarily used to sell opposite vs. a trail defender or to hold a defender with cushion.

A lot of good in here… - “purposeful movement” = have a plan - “break his hip/open up” = eliminate cushion to take control - “downshifting” = use of tempo to keep the defender off-balance But most important of it all: “You play your own melody, but you’re on the QB’s time”

.@tkelce thinks about route running like being a ball handler on a basketball court. Learning from the best at @te_university. 🗣

EYES AWAY FROM THE DB = PULL THEM Out-leveraged off the LOS? Don’t panic. Use the eyes to move the DB! Eyes opposite during the stem = pull the DB to your far hip. Prefer to win at the TOR = give the DB two and flash the eyes to sell opposite. 🔑 = DB must feel you pull away!

EYES TO THE DB = HOLD THEM When do we stare down a DB? When we have them where we want them! Save leverage + prevent them from driving on the route in-phase. Stare them down during the stem before leaving them at the TOR.

Jahan Dotson winning on the second level release. Don’t waste time against free access. Eliminate the added cushion then reset the LOS. Mentality is no different than winning at the LOS: 1. Gain ground with every step 2. Play low to lower 3. Break the nose-to-nose relationship
