It is critically important to recognize police service members who have died by suicide, or #BecauseOfTheLineOfDuty, to ensure we remember and recognize the contributions and sacrifices they and their families made in life to the communities they served, and carry their legacies forward with respect, compassion, and fairness. This includes the risks they took to their own mental health and well-being, their own physical safety, and the toll it took on them, took, and continues to take, every day, on their families as survivors. I was humbled to gather with police services from across Ontario yesterday during the inaugural Ontario Police Suicide Memorial ceremony, which was organized by @CanadaBTB and featured a Silent March and a tribute to fallen officers. No one was meant to fight through adversity alone. First responders can access confidential, anonymous peer support 24/7 @BootsOTGround. True story: sedated on Ativan for a flight to LA and they asked if there was a Doctor on board. Drowsily, I stuck up my hand. 🤦‍♀️ A colleague pulled it back down. Turns out the person was having an anxiety attack and I actually could’ve helped (had more Ativan in my purse). 😁

Our organization had the honour of attending an incredibly significant event organized by Canada Beyond the Blue, with the support of the Police Association of Ontario, the Ontario Provincial Police Association, and the Toronto Police Association. We gathered to commemorate our fellow officers who have tragically lost their lives to suicide because of the line of duty. These brave individuals deserve a formal memorial that not only acknowledges the impact they had during their service but also legitimizes the grief felt by those they left behind. The constant exposure to trauma in our line of work can take a severe toll on mental health. Special thanks to Dilnaz Garda for her dedication, commitment and advocacy.
