Story Time - Plane Crash My Papa died when I was 8 years old, he was the Patriarch of our whole family. He was the glue that held it all together. When he passed one of his clients was Hyatt and they gave my Mom a suite at the Hyatt in Puerto Rico. We flew from Miami to Puerto Rico on a late flight. 30 minutes after take off the lights in the cabin flickered followed by what sounded like muffled fire crackers. Pilot: “The popping noises u heard were fire extinguishers going off in the baggage compartment, likely from an aerosol container.” Passengers frantically looked around but the problem seemed to have passed. Lights flickered again with a turbulent plane movement. Pilot: “It seems the fire was near the electronics because we are having an issue with 1 of the engines.” A few erratic motions of the plane… Pilot: “We’ve lost power to the 1st engine entirely stand by.” Another plane jerking motion… Pilot: “We’ve lost power to the 2nd engine and are looking for somewhere to land the plane.” I mean that’s fine except we are over the Atlantic Ocean. No where to land… Pilot: “Prepare for a water landing.” 8 year old me: “MOM what’s going on.” Before my mom could answer… Pilot: “There are 3-5 ft swells in the Atlantic, the plane will not remain intact for a landing, looking for alternatives.” Now the plane starts descending a bit faster… Pilot: “We’ve contacted Cuban air control and they are threatening to shoot the plane down if we enter Havana air space. We are going to land on a small runway, brace for a VERY rough landing.” 8 year old me had no idea how close to death I was, or what a “rough landing” meant. I was about to find out. Imagine a 4 engine jet aircraft trying to touch down on a runway built for single engine Cessnas…an impossible task. The runway was barely a blip out the window, no lights, no air controller, just a small patch of tarmac. My brother screaming(almost all were): “I’m too young to die, I’m too young to die.” Imagine a 6 yr old screaming this. My Mom: “Boys YOU WILL BE FINE.” At the time I didn’t realize she was full of shit. The pilot pulled off a landing they should have made a movie about. He touched the plane down going too fast, the plane would have slid off the run way. Solution? Half way down the runway he pulled the plane back into the air 50-100ft allowing it to stall out and fall vertically straight down. Crushing the baggage compartment and destroying the landing gear. Cheering like u couldn’t imagine. The whole plane just won the lottery of life. We all took the emergency slides down to be greeted by heavily armed Cuban military personnel. Mom: “Boys do NOT say anything u are Canadian.” The pilot, co pilot, and crew were immediately arrested and taken away. The entire plane was shuffled into a room with 30 chairs 2 bathroom stalls and 3 pay phones. In rotation everyone called home (this was 1998 no personal cell phones yet). The island we crash landed on was owned by Cuba reserved for the elites to scuba dive and vacation (I don’t know the name to this day). I was in Cuba at 8 😎 although had no idea what that even meant. The only airport with crews still available was Los Angeles given the flight’s time. A plane and crew flew from LA came get us. But they were 6 hours away. The airline (will remain unnamed) hired a chef to come in and cook everything on the menu for the 200 of us. I was so excited we had a buffet of mozzarella sticks and chicken fingers. 5 hours after gorging on Cuba snacks our plane arrived and we made it to Puerto Rico. 6 years later I was retelling the story when I realized something, how’d my mom know we’d be okay?! So I asked her, she grinned and said: “I thought we’d die, BUT my son’s last thoughts were not going to be fearful. If we died, it would be together and not scared.” Imagine the courage a mother must have to say that. Lesson: Those that love you, will stand by u even at death, with a smile and pride.
