Those who saw’A Beautiful Mind’, would remember that John Nash’s doctoral thesis had just 26 pages and 2 references, yet it was instrumental in advancing “Game theory”. What if I told you there is a scientist whose achievement is so astounding that he is perhaps the only Indian to “create” an intersectional branch of science? What if I told you that every year, his name echoes across the hallowed halls of science in foreign lands, but most of our students haven't even heard of him?
Aneesur Rahman was born in Hyderabad in British India in 1927. His father was a professor and a philanthropist. His family generously donated their property for the creation of Urdu Hall in Hyderabad. His maternal uncle was a professor too. Rahman had a natural flair for subjects that would terrify ‘normal’ students — maths and physics. After getting BSc in Mathematics, he went on to get Tripos in Mathematics and Physics at the prestigious Cambridge University in the UK. From there, he went to Louvaine University in Belgium and got DSc in Physics under Professor Mannenbeck. It’s here that Rahman met a Chinese student Yueh-Erh Li who was doing MD( called Dr Jady by friends). They fell in love and got married.
He came back to teach in Osmania university along with his wife. Soon after, he developed interest in the structure of water molecule - especially the polarisation of the hydrogen atom. Unfortunately research in India was at infancy in those days and Dr Rahman realized he was a whale in a tiny pond. He had to move to the ocean. He joined the Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois.
His foundational paper in 1964 birthed “molecular dynamics” , one of the two pillars on which a vast body of computational physics rests.(the other is Monte Carlo method). His equation made it possible to calculate the trajectory of large number of interacting atoms with ease.
His work, like Ramanujan’s , was so ahead of his time - that even today, potential applications are being discovered. The Nobel prize in physics for 2013 went to Karplus, Levitt and Warshel whose work depended heavily on Dr Aneesur Rahman’s.
Some say there is an inverse association between genius and compassion -Dr Rahman was a prominent exception. He was known not just for his intellect, but also kind nature and mentored many students all over the world. His quiet, unassuming nature made him a much loved professor — and he remained so, until he got Non Hodgkin’s lymphoma — a cancer that took him away from us prematurely, at the age of 59. Perhaps he might have got a Nobel, if only he had lived longer.
American Physical Society honors him as the father of computational physics and has instituted an annual award in his name.
As a doctor with little idea of theoretical physics, writing Dr Aneesur Rahman’s portrait has been difficult , because of the complex nature of his work that straddles so many areas of science : mathematics, physics, computer science and chemistry. His equations are mind boggling, even intimidating, but
what I do understand is this : Dr Rahman didn't just have a beautiful mind, but also a beautiful heart.

Leaving a flat in Bangalore… and losing most of the deposit 😳

I was living in a 3BHK flat in Bangalore with two roommates. When we moved in, we paid a ₹70,000 security deposit.
After some time, the owner suddenly asked us to vacate because he wanted to sell the flat. We agreed and moved out peacefully.
But the shock came later…Out of ₹70,000, he returned only ₹18,000 🤯
He deducted one month’s rent, saying the flat would need painting and repairs, and since no one would stay during that time, he would face a loss.
But how is that the tenant’s responsibility?
If he had informed us earlier, we could have helped find a new tenant. On top of that, he also deducted money for damages that were already there. We had informed him about those issues earlier, and at that time he told us to get them fixed ourselves.
He owns around 10 flats in Bangalore… so what does he really gain by holding back a tenant’s deposit like this? Now I’m planning to send him a legal notice. If he doesn’t respond within 15 days, I may have to take the matter to court.
He has even blocked me on WhatsApp, so there’s no way to talk and resolve this directly.

The Indian CBFC censored The Voice of Hind Rajab, calling it “very sensitive,” yet allows violent propaganda films like Dhurandhar. Exposing a child’s murder by Israel is off limits to protect Israel India relationship. Shameful.

For those who don’t know:
Hind Rajab, a 5-year-old Palestinian girl, was trapped in a car during the Gaza conflict. She was killed, and the vehicle she was in was reportedly hit by 300+ bullets.
-Hind’s cousin, 15-year-old Layan Hamada, made an urgent call to the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS), stating that they were being targeted. A few seconds later, gunshots were heard, and Layan’s screaming abruptly stopped.
-Hind was alive, and she stayed on the call with emergency services, pleading for help for hours.
-The paramedics sent to rescue her were killed.
-The decomposing bodies of Hind, Layan, and their family members were discovered many days later.
-Her story became a global symbol of civilian suffering in war.
-The Voice of Hind Rajab documents her story. It has been nominated for an Oscar for Best International Feature Film.
In India, the Central Board of Film Certification censored the film. The reason cited was that it could affect India–Israel relations. (1)

There is something deeply uncomfortable about watching a world leader pivot from publicly insulting Japan over Pearl Harbor to offering fawning birthday wishes to the president’s son. Takaichi is trying to play the “best buddy” card to protect Japan’s interests, but it comes across as a desperate surrender of dignity.

These sweeping transfers only happen in non-BJP ruled states & especially in West Bengal but that’s no surprise. However, West Bengal will once again prove what I have always believed to be true - officers don’t win elections for political parties, the leaders of political parties do. No amount of effort by the Election Commission to gerrymander will change the results. Come counting day Mamata Didi will win a thumping majority.

The manner in which the Election Commission has singled out and targeted Bengal is not just unprecedented- It is deeply alarming. Even before the formal notification of elections, more than 50 senior officials including the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, DGP, ADGs, IGs, DIGs, District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police have been summarily and arbitrarily removed. This is not administrative action rather this is political interference of the highest order. The systematic politicisation of institutions meant to remain impartial is a direct assault on the Constitution. At a time when a deeply flawed SIR process is underway and over 200 lives have already been lost, the conduct of the Commission reflects a clear bias and an uncomfortable submission to political interests, continuing to put the people of Bengal at risk. Supplementary electoral rolls are still not published, in clear disregard of the Hon’ble Supreme Court’s directions, leaving citizens anxious and uncertain. Meanwhile, senior officers from critical agencies like IB, STF and CID are being selectively removed and dispatched out of the state, pointing to a calculated attempt to cripple Bengal’s administrative machinery. Why is the BJP so desperate? Why this relentless targeting of Bengal and its people? What satisfaction do they derive from forcing citizens, even after 78 years of Independence, to stand in queues and prove their own citizenship? The contradictions in the Commission’s actions expose its complete collapse of credibility. It claims that removed officers should not be assigned election duties, yet within hours, the same officers are sent out as election observers. The appointment of the Commissioners of Police of Siliguri and Bidhannagar as observers, without even putting replacements in place, left two vital urban centres effectively headless. It was only after this glaring lapse came to light that rushed corrections followed. This is not governance. It reflects chaos, confusion and sheer incompetence being passed off as authority. This is not incidental, it points to a deliberate design to seize control of West Bengal through coercion and institutional manipulation. What we are witnessing is nothing short of an undeclared emergency and an unpromulgated form of president’s rule driven by political vendetta, not democratic principles. Having failed to win the trust of Bengal’s people, the BJP is now attempting to capture the state through coercion, intimidation, manipulation and the misuse of institutions. I stand in complete solidarity with every officer of the Government of West Bengal and their families, who are being targeted simply for serving the state with honesty and commitment. Bengal has never bowed to intimidation and it never will. Bengal will fight, Bengal will resist and Bengal will decisively defeat every attempt to impose a divisive and destructive agenda on its soil.

How hard is it to simply acknowledge that the Ganga River is sacred to Hindus, and that basic respect should be maintained around it?
Instead, they are equating a religious last rite like immersing ashes in the Ganga with eating chicken & throwing it into the river, labeling both as “non-veg,” as if the difference isn’t obvious.
Since when has human cremation ever been reduced to a “non-veg” category ? Well this is the mindset of so-called secularists...

Alliances work because there are no surprises among friends. Using the trauma of 1941 to justify keeping a key partner in the dark about a 2026 war is not a clever rhetorical move. It is a massive strategic error. We are seeing the dismantling of decades of trust for the sake of a soundbite and it is going to leave every ally in the Indo Pacific questioning where they truly stand.

True partnerships are built on mutual respect and shared intelligence not historical insults. Watching a Prime Minister sit through a Pearl Harbor lecture while her country’s energy security is on the line is a dark day for Japanese diplomacy. It shows that the security umbrella now comes with a side of public humiliation and a total disregard for the actual needs of a sovereign ally.

Who hijacks a boat in broad daylight, in one of the most surveilled cities in India, while recording a public Iftar? As we have seen in Gaza they want to silence journalists who document and report their war crimes
It is the western powers who provide political and military support for I$rael, arming it to the teeth to carry out genocide in Gaza and ethnic cleansing here in Lebanon. They are not simply complicit, but active participants and should be held accountable for their actions.
But if I$rael thinks today’s strike will silence us and keep us out of the field they are very, very mistaken
