@USTA I longer I play and teachj tennis the more I'm convinced that American Players need to develop their games on RED CLAY. It demands more balanced and rhythmic movement as well as encouraging faster racquet speed and great variety of shots. Watch HOUSTON right now!

@bryanlehrer I think that’s mainly it. All about racquet head speed to create speed and spin. Less 18x20s, less lead tape, less 100inch or extended frames.

@ThreadOrder There’s a 100 or 125 challenger and a M25 Future tournament in Italy seemingly every week.
It boggles my mind that there isn’t at least a M15 every week in the US.

@raphaelcohen6_ @ThreadOrder I’m French too but have lived in Italy, pretty sure the share of clay court is as high (I’d say even higher) here than over there but it’s more the eye test over a couple regions rather than true stats so to take with a pinch of salt

@Turin1345 Yes the US is producing a lot of good players but these players lack elements that clay court tennis develops (movement/variation/big forehands).

@ThreadOrder Yes but Mayotte’s point was for the US which are also easily placing players in the top 50 and quite frequently top 10 so I thought here it was more about the slam winning tier of players

@raphaelcohen6_ @Turin1345 You do have wayyy more clay courts proportionally (I’d wager it is close to 50/50) to US/UK/Aus and you have an endless number of tournaments available on clay in short travel distances

@Turin1345 @ThreadOrder France isn’t. I’m French and most of the courts are hardcourts or similar (porous concrete). We have probably more clay courts than in the US proportionally, but a lot of kids don’t grow and learn tennis on the dirt

2nd serve return contact points for Paul (left) and Lehecka vs Fils in Miami from Courtside Advantage. I was a little surprised Paul didn't look to take his 2nd return early against the longer swings of Fils stuck on a baseline. Fils won 69% of 2nd serve points vs Paul.

2026 has been great for sinner in serving. He's been brave & hitting more wide and mid line serves than ever before. So the first serve percentage doesn't play much role than it did in the past coz he is hitting aces

I touched on this in Indian Wells but Sinner's step change in serve accuracy ~Paris last year is such a scary prospect. He's *consistently* locating 1st serves 46cm from the line at 124mph. That's 5mph faster AND 5cm more accurate than Djoker.

@lukaszlamura Just match number, with the first match in this sample being Beijing against Cilic, where Sinner’s post-US Open serve change technique was first observed.

Miami is arguably worst stop on the calendar for top non-US guys (especially if they’ve won it). End of a long hard court slog, worse than old venue, long time from home, and just delays prep for the next major on clay. This is a good early loss to take in a long view for 2026
