The NHL is the anti-NBA in every possible way right now. The sport has never been more viral or more popular. Meanwhile the NBA is struggling. Bad. Igor Shesterkin and Jacob Markstrom just dropped the gloves at Madison Square Garden. A goalie fight. That makes three goalie fights in the NHL this season. Before January 19, there hadn't been one in six years. On January 19, Sergei Bobrovsky left his crease, sprinted the entire length of the ice, and started throwing punches at San Jose's Alex Nedeljkovic. He tore off Nedeljkovic's mask and both goalies ended up on the ice without helmets or gloves. It was the first goalie fight since Mike Smith and Cam Talbot went at it during the Battle of Alberta on February 1, 2020. Six years of nothing. Then Bobrovsky snapped. Thirteen days later, it happened again. The Stadium Series. Tampa Bay vs. Boston. 64,617 people. An outdoor game. Jeremy Swayman tackled Brandon Hagel after the whistle, then looked across the ice at Andrei Vasilevskiy and challenged him. They met at center ice and dropped the gloves. It was the first goalie fight in the history of an NHL outdoor game. Vasilevskiy landed the first punch, drove Swayman to the ice, then tapped him on the head and smiled as the refs pulled them apart. Tampa Bay had been trailing by four goals. After the fight, the Lightning mounted the biggest comeback in franchise history and won 6-5 in a shootout. Two goalie fights in two weeks after six years of zero. And tonight, it happened again. Shesterkin, the highest-paid goalie in NHL history at $11.5 million a year, dropped the gloves with Markstrom at the Garden in the final Rangers-Devils meeting of the season. Three more just happened in ten weeks. Whatever stopped goalies from fighting for six years is gone. The position found its edge again.

Glenn just named 35-year-old Geno Smith his starting quarterback and said, "He's the guy that's going to lead us to the promised land." This is the same Geno Smith the Jets drafted in 2013. The same one who threw 21 interceptions as a rookie. The same one who got punched in the face by his own teammate over $600 and had his jaw broken in the locker room. He tore his ACL with the Jets in 2016. Never started for them again. After New York, Smith became a ghost. He signed with the Giants in 2017. Head coach Ben McAdoo benched Eli Manning to start Smith, ending Manning's streak of 210 consecutive starts. The Giants lost. McAdoo was fired. Smith made one start and went back to the bench. He signed with the Chargers in 2018. Held a clipboard behind Philip Rivers. Then he signed with Seattle in 2019 to back up Russell Wilson. He held that clipboard for three straight years. By 2022, Smith was 31 years old. He hadn't started an NFL game since that one night with the Giants in 2017. Most people forgot he was in the league. Then Seattle traded Russell Wilson. And Geno Smith became the starter. He led the NFL in completion percentage at 69.8%. He threw for 4,282 yards and 30 touchdowns. He won Comeback Player of the Year. He made his first Pro Bowl in his tenth season. Nobody comes back like that. Years on the bench and then the best passer in football. But he did it. Seattle gave him a three-year, $75 million extension. He made a second Pro Bowl in 2023. He threw for 4,320 yards in 2024. Then the Raiders traded for him. Pete Carroll was the coach. And it fell apart. Las Vegas went 3-14. Smith was sacked 55 times. He led the league in interceptions. The offensive line gave him nothing and the offensive coordinator got fired after 11 games. One year later, the Raiders traded him to the Jets for a sixth-round pick.
