Prejudice against a regime that walked unarmed boys and men over mine fields to clear the way for armed troops to get at Iraqi defenses is not a bad thing. Prejudice against a regime that uses hired Sunnis from other nations to massacre your own citizens is not a bad thing. Then there is a massacre of 45,000 demonstrators this January. The Shia tradition of being faithful to the true message of the Prophet and being oppressed by the Sunni for their belief allowed the regime to waste human lives without a care. Are these facts not real? Or perhaps the people the regime killed weren’t important?

The irreversible decisions are the ones that keep getting made upstream before the public even understands the bill is coming due: incentive structures locked in, institutions captured, corruption normalized, human lives priced like variables, and systems built to protect themselves instead of people. By the time the bomb drops, the contract is signed, the rights are gone, or the body count starts, the real decision was already made.
