One of my favorite marketing campaigns ever. I spent so much time on YouTube trying to uncover what this could possibly be

The original Cloverfield (2008) trailer dropped before Transformers with no title, just chaos and a date, kicking off months of people dissecting every frame and chasing clues across a full-blown viral campaign.

the gore was top notch, i was squirming in my seat and watching thru my fingers at times, and the cinematography was very competent, lots of cool shots. lee cronin LOVES himself a split diopter lmao. there were some very solid individual sequences sprinkled throughout that would get me excited and will please many horror lovers, but they were intertwined with some stuff that also had me checking my watch, overall it just felt sorta bloated and began to drag. it kinda felt like two different films in one, but neither got to be as incredible as they could’ve been because of it. when it got the most mean spirited was when i had the most fun, and i wish there was more consistently dragged out *tension* throughout. there was also quite a bit of awkward pacing where like something would start happening, then we’d cut to something else on screen supposedly going on at the same time as what we just saw, but it would take questionably long for the thing we just saw to end up coming back into importance, or it just wouldn’t go back to that thing at all on screen, which left me scratching my head a bit… same with the way certain scenes would end and the next one would start. also the parents kept getting on my last nerve, the characters were not written that well imo and it resulted in me caring for the family less as it went on. and not just bc i didn’t agree with their actions or something, cuz i totally get the family drama aspect and how they’re all grieving differently and not communicating well like yasss explore that, but it was in an annoying way where it felt like more of a writing issue. and i just hate being frustratedddd at a movie when it’s not like intentional to instill fear. regardless tho it was still an interesting watch, i can totally see why others liked it more than me so def still give it a chance like it’s not terrible by ANY means and a few scenes really stuck with me, but something about it overall just felt tame/safe and too formulaic to me, and i found myself rolling my eyes at the way things played out a few times, despite the few really gnarly scenes and cool set pieces they had that helped save it. i also just wasn’t that moved by the finale in the way i wish i was, like as the moments that you could tell were supposed to be gaggy and intense for the last 20 minutes were happening i just wasn’t gagging at all. got a few good laughs out of me throughout the film tho which i also appreciated. 3/5
