We honor the life of Lawrence Brooks, who passed away at the remarkable age of 112-the oldest known WWII veteran. Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1940 at 31, he served with the segregated 91st Engineer Battalion and was deployed to the Pacific, where he spent the war in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines. There, he played a vital role behind the front lines-driving trucks across difficult terrain, cooking for officers, and helping construct the roads, bridges, and airstrips that supported Allied operations.
After returning home to New Orleans, Lawrence built a full life-working for decades as a forklift operator, raising five children, and watching his family grow through generations. His life, spanning more than a century, stood as a powertul example of dedication, resilience, and quiet strength.
May he be remembered with honor-God bless Lawrence Brooks, and thank you for your service.

My dad is 91 and has spent his whole life helping others. Now he needs our help - Please pray for him. He’s in a fight for his life.
Several years ago, when my dad moved from the house I grew up in, my brother found this note. It’s a touching testament to the kind of life he has led. And it’s a testament to the impact one person can have on the life of another. He gave someone the gift of sight. What a beautiful blessing for them both.
My dad - Dr. Larry Baker - first was an eye doctor and surgeon in the US Navy and then in Lafayette for nearly 50 years. Then in his “retirement” he spent another 20 years volunteering with Acadiana Hospice, many of which were as Medical Director.
Ms. Viola Lopez’s sweet words and joyful gratitude emanate from her letter thanking him for helping her obtain the gift of sight.
Now my 91-year-old dad has been fighting for his life. He was a spry 91 a few weeks ago then got slammed with a quadruple triple whammy of a virus and a number of other things that flattened him like a freight train.
He’s been fighting his way back. Slowly and painfully. I’m beyond grateful to the doctors, nurses, support staff and administrators at Lourdes and FMOL. I’m grateful to his long time primary care doc Mike Alexander and his urologist Sam Sheffler who have been his doctors for 20 years. And I’m grateful to God for all the time we have been given with my dad.
One of us, his children, is with him 24/7. He wants to live awhile longer. I believe he can. Please pray for him. He needs it now more than ever. ❤️
