Everyone wondered why Iran’s IRGC hit Duqm Port in Oman early in the war. Here’s why: U.S. Navy vessels had docked there for fuel and supplies days earlier. Satellite imagery below shows a USNS supply ship & an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer at the same pier that was struck.

45 years ago today: the Nimitz Prowler crash March 26 1981: an EA-6B Prowler [Registration "159910"] crashes while landing on the carrier USS Nimitz, off the Florida coast (US). All 3 jet crew and 11 crew deck die, 48 others are also injured. Aircraft missed the last arresting cable while ignoring a wave-off command, colliding with three F-14s parked on the deck. Inquiry raised issues related to drug testing, as the EA-6 pilot actions were likely influenced by the incorrect dosage of a cold remedy. Another aspect analyzed by the investigators was the handling of ammunition and fuel, and the influence it had on the conflagration

23 years ago: the Spanish Peacekeepers tragedy May 26 2003: UMA Flight 4230, a Yak-42, crashes in Maçka (Turkey). All 75 aboard die, mostly Spanish troops returning from Afghanistan. On approach jet hit ridge in CFIT. Inquiry noted crew actions (loss of SW, breach of SOP, navigation) along with training and others, as described below. Report underlined crew actions on the maneuver, pointing pilots loss of situation awareness, breach of SOP, incorrect use of the flight system, inadequate training, among other factors The plane went down near Trabzon airport. Flight was chartering 62 Spanish peacekeeping soldiers from Afghanistan back to Spain, where the accident became a national tragedy. The accident was the third involving an Ukranian airline in 6 months, raising some concerns about safety standards on the airline contracted by the Spanish Government for the flight

The NTSB later found that the N110AA DC-10 disaster began weeks before the AA191 crash during a maintenance procedure at American Airlines’ Tulsa facility. McDonnell Douglas recommended removing the engine and pylon separately, but American, Continental, and United used a faster shortcut by removing them together to save time and labor hours. During maintenance on Flight 191’s aircraft, a slight forklift misalignment jammed the pylon against the wing, creating a small structural crack that went unnoticed. Over the next 8 weeks, the crack grew with every flight cycle until the pylon finally failed during takeoff rotation, causing the entire engine to tear away from the wing. Fleet inspections afterward found similar damage on other DC-10s as well.

AMERICAN AIRLINES FLIGHT 191 — THE DAY THE DC-10 CHANGED AVIATION FOREVER 49 years ago today, May 25, 1979, American Airlines Flight 191 crashed moments after takeoff from Chicago O’Hare, killing all 271 people on board and 2 on the ground. It remains the deadliest single-aircraft crash in U.S. history. The McDonnell Douglas DC-10 had just rotated off Runway 32R when the unthinkable happened: the entire No.1 left engine and pylon tore away from the wing, flipped over the aircraft, and slammed onto the runway. The separation severed critical hydraulic and electrical systems, causing the left wing’s leading-edge slats to retract unexpectedly. With the right wing still producing full lift and thrust, the aircraft became catastrophically unbalanced. The left wing stalled first. Within seconds, the DC-10 rolled violently to a 112° bank angle, nearly inverted, before crashing into a field near a trailer park at the end of the runway. Investigators later discovered the root cause was improper maintenance procedures. To save time, the engine and pylon had been removed together using a forklift instead of following McDonnell Douglas’ approved method. The process damaged the pylon structure, creating cracks that went unnoticed until catastrophic failure occurred during takeoff. Even more tragic: simulator tests later proved the crew did almost everything correctly. Critical stall warning systems had been disabled by the electrical failure, leaving the pilots with no indication the left wing was stalling. Flight 191 reshaped aviation safety forever, leading to stricter maintenance oversight, redesigned inspection procedures, and independent stall warning systems for both pilots. A tragedy that changed aviation history forever. Video shows recreation footage.

A highlight of this year's @ILA_Berlin Airshow will be the #AW249 #Fenice (press release talks about "global debut in an air show", so appears to be flying). With Germany still considering its long-term post-Tiger options, this European solution may fit the bill. Regardless, unquestionably the best looking attack helicopter out there... While Romanian families shivered in unheated apartments and waited hours for meager bread rations, Nicolae Ceaușescu built himself a 1,100-room palace that consumed $3 billion of his nation's wealth. The Casa Poporului stands today as a monument to the inevitable outcome when central planners face zero market constraints on their appetites. Ceaușescu's palace contains 12 stories above ground, spreads across 365,000 square meters, and required 20,000 workers laboring in shifts around the clock. He demolished entire historic neighborhoods of Bucharest to clear space for his architectural ego trip. Meanwhile, his citizens endured bread queues, rolling blackouts, and heating restrictions so severe that hospitals couldn't maintain proper temperatures. The dictator diverted the nation's resources toward marble, crystal chandeliers, and gold leaf while his people literally froze. Without market prices to signal genuine demand or profit-and-loss mechanisms to punish waste, political authorities inevitably channel resources toward projects that serve their personal preferences rather than human needs. Ceaușescu faced no competitors, no angry shareholders, no bankruptcy risk. He simply commanded the nation's productive capacity to serve his grandiose vision. The palace required 3,500 tons of crystal, 480 chandeliers, 1,409 ceiling lights, and 700,000 tons of steel and bronze. Every ton of material that went into those ornate rooms represented food, medicine, fuel, or housing that never reached Romanian families. The arithmetic is brutal but simple: centralized control means resources flow toward political vanity projects rather than genuine human priorities. The building still stands, largely empty, costing millions annually just to maintain its unused splendor.
