George Floyd’s life was taken from him 6 years ago today.
There are 5 main points I'd like to make today as we remember this man:
1) The Police acted in disgusting fashion and were WRONG.
We need to learn from this, make new laws to make sure this doesn't ever happen again. We need to see to it that we hire people who know better and are trained to deal with such situations humanely.
2) Police Are NOT the Enemy.
One of the most stressful jobs on the planet is a Police officer. They protect us and save lives daily. They put other people before themselves and their own mental states. There are bad cops, but the vast majority of police are heroes.
3) Don't let the riots and damage after Floyd's death define Floyd as a man or overshadow what happened here.
Destruction and riots are NEVER the answer. To those who rioted, you are wrong.
4) Stop Pretending that Floyd's Past remotely makes his Death any less tragic.
Good people do bad things. Good people who do bad things also do good things. We've all done things we regret. Don't let his past diminish his right to live, or how horrible the actions of the officers were.
5) Use this to Unite People, Not Divide Them
Floyd's death should be a catalyst for change. It should spark conversations and ignite dialogue. It should inspire peaceful activism and teach us all how to be better.
