we rely on companies to protect this data, but they aren't very good at it. if they fail, then our account, accounts in other systems, and even our identity become vulnerable. permission forces us into this reliance; we can't access systems otherwise.

for every new account, we give some info to sign up. at minimum, this is a username and password, but some systems require more sensitive information like our personal or financial details. the risk of our data being mishandled grows with every account we create.

only bank employees can change our balance, and only social media employees can see our sensitive data. without permission, this dynamic couldn’t exist. it has been the only practical way to make systems work and keep users safe.

☆* ・゚ PERMISSION: THE GOOD 。★・ permission is a big part of trust-based systems. every day, we rely on other people to let us do things like spending our money or posting something new online. these are people we have to trust.

we've accepted permission as a "best compromise" to keep digital systems secure. it’s not perfect, but what other option do we have? ideally, we could find a way to achieve the same stability we enjoy in systems today, but without needing permission to do so.

while companies and governments today mostly act in good faith with their control, there’s still plenty that don't. plus, fair entities today always have room to become unfair tomorrow. this room exists because of trust.

☆* ・゚ PERMISSION: THE UGLY 。★・ permission can also be intentionally used against us. it's a tool, and whoever wields it decides how it's used.

some direct costs are fees and minimum deposits. some indirect costs are formal documents, travel distance, proof of income, and credit history. these costs act as barriers to opening bank accounts, earning on savings, getting loans or credit cards, and making investments.

so if local services aren’t adequate (or don’t exist), we don't have permission to use other ones. we’re stuck with what we have, for better or worse. even when available in our region, the cost of access may be too high. we can only use systems that we can afford.

maybe it's where we live. we can only use systems that are available in our region. that's because companies need permission too. they need licenses everywhere they want to serve. being available everywhere is expensive and complex, especially for financial systems.
