Today's Black American (Freedmen) is Dorothy McFadden Hoover. As an aeronautical research scientist, she revolutionized the physics of flight. While working for NASA, she provided the sophisticated mathematical equations required to stabilize swept-back wings at supersonic speeds. ​In 1951, she co-authored a landmark research report with Robert T. Jones on thin, tapered wings, a breakthrough that solved critical lift distribution issues. When I tweet about Black Americans, my goal is to remind us that we are a whole people. There is a growing push to tie the Black American legacy to a broad, abstract idea of a past that may have never been. In doing so, we risk anchoring our present and orienting our children’s future around something idealized rather than grounded. That does not serve us well—we are already seeing the effects of this at the community level. We seem to be losing our sense of self, in part due to this shift. I’m not saying the intent is malicious (though some argue that it is). What I am saying is that if we want to begin repairing our community, we cannot focus on economics alone—we must also consider our social position. We need to reaffirm who we are, so that we, as a people, can rebuild the pride and faith in ourselves that our ancestors once carried.
