@msresii @OreeditseMawela @ansarlets No idea but it's changing so rapidly, it's getting bad for residents. I also suspect the increase in drug use among the youth tbh.

@QueenAwesome24 @ansarlets lol that person lied to you it’s for safety, it’s basically alerting those going to work that it’s safe to go we got you covered, they even accompany them taxis and so forth, at the end of the month they collect so monies from different households

The vuvuzela is for many different reasons

Stayed at my cousins in Soweto DK last for a while. Around 4am I heard vuvuzelas going off. I later asked what's going on and was told it's the neighborhood watch alerting the public it's safe to make their way. Our people are not lazy

We call them mabangalala mo Mabopane. I had this elderly man who fetched me everyday at 5am and waited with me until I got a taxi. He did this for three years

And those vuvuzelas have been going off for YEARS. Been hearing them since I was in grade 2, 2005. We woke up at 4am and the transport would fetch us around 5:30 for school.

@ansarlets Fun fact... Back in the day, it was so that workers could catch the morning shosholoza (people's train). It's been around so long that it's turned into a neighborhood watch type of thing.

@ansarlets Recently started staying in Soweto, it I thought it was strange until I met the person who blows it and asked him why. Apparently its to wake people up and alert them that the train is coming.
