@TracyMSweet Same issue with eduroam here. In new classrooms, I can directly plug my ipad to the projector. In the others, I do a Zoom call which I join from my laptop and my iPad and share the screen from my iPad to the Zoom call, which I broadcast to the class with my laptop.

@KellyMSpoon My first day back after starting the course in virtual mode was very weird indeed! I kept feeling like I should to introduce myself, present the syllabus and talk about how the course would work. Like whatever happened online wasn't with the same people.

PrivBayes (ift.tt/2zToTVh ) uses Bayesian networks to generate synthetic data with Differential Privacy, but it involves discretizing continuous vars. Has anyone seen a DP version which directly accomodates continuous variables, as in Gaussian Bayesian Networks? #privacy

@ChristinaWolfs1 @DrJWolfson @mcgillu I enjoyed all my courses with him. He never rushed things and took the time to carefully discuss the details of the theory and methodology, making sure we understood the nuances of different statistical statements. A great foundation for the rest of my statistical learning!

@ClaireMKBowen And I think I've also heard the name synthetic data used in the context of pretext tasks in deep learning.

Short answer: No. Long answer (from a statistician): Synthetic data is a technique that aims to generate data with pseudo or "fake" records that are statistically representative of the original data. But how is that done? 1/n

Q for my more stats-y friends working in AI/ML: is synthetic data just bootstrapping? If not, how does it differ? It just seems to be a Big Thing now and I’m wondering if this is just tech discovering something we’ve already been doing for a while.
