Nobody Knows proves that cinema can find the sacred in the ordinary

Deep within the mist-shrouded Carpathian Mountains of Transylvania lies the Scholomance, a legendary subterranean academy of the dark arts where the Devil acts as headmaster. According to Romanian folklore, only a handful of students are admitted at a time to undergo years of rigorous training in complete darkness, never seeing the sun until their studies are complete. These scholars learn the secret languages of animals, the mechanics of nature, and the mastery of every known spell. However, graduation comes with a terrifying cost. While most are eventually released back into the world, the Devil claims one final student as his permanent servant. This chosen individual becomes a “Weathermaker” tasked with riding a colossal dragon across the skies to brew thunderstorms and strike lightning. Bram Stoker famously adapted this myth for his novel Dracula, suggesting the Count gained his supernatural powers by attending this devilish institution. 🎨Architectural diagram and cross-section by Elwira Pawlikowska, designed for Naomi Novik's Scholomance book series.
