It’s hard reading tweets about people finishing their books and writing. Don’t get me wrong I’m happy for them but a few weeks ago I took a much needed break and when I was about to restart I got this cancer diagnosis and now…well I won’t be writing for a bit 😔

One route out of this nightmare, is to pull poetry in primary schools away from the arid desert of 'expected levels' and bogus grammar, and put it in PSHE, and talk about empathy, relationships, self-esteem, loneliness, hope, despair, love, anxiety, the state of things around us!

Talented authors deserve to be paid well; if the average income continues at 7k a year, only the already-privileged writers (or celebrities) will be able to afford this career. And literature will be limited to their voices alone. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
