For the record, my assessment of aborting a fetus due to disability as eugenics is NOT an argument for restricting abortion access. Nor is it designed to manufacture guilt in parents who choose this route. It’s an argument for recognizing normalized eugenics AND…

… for increasing social support for disabled people to remain in community, and social support for caregivers. One can be empathetic to the argument that aborting disabled people is a choice made in many cases because of a lack of social support for disabled people.

The solution isn’t criminalization. The solution is freedom. Freedom to choose, wherein said choice is not deeply influenced —if not coerced— by a social system which devalues disabled people as “burdens” “useless eaters” or “life unworthy of life” (to quote eugenicists).

UN CRPD Disability Rights Advocacy
All these "progressives" and "moderates" on the Down Syndrome eugenics debate and not ONE to help fight for disability rights, better support systems, and a more inclusive world. It's just "lock them up" and "die". The biggest obstacle to disability rights is the fake left.

It is literally textbook eugenics. You can participate in eugenics or racism individually, crazy i know. Being against societal ableism coercing people into aborting disabled fetuses is in fact not anti choice. Wow.
Ally@softbutmouthy

Hm, no, sorry. I’m not buying into the ‘it’s eugenics to abort a baby with Down syndrome.’ Just say you’re anti choice and go. Unfortunately some of you do not realize that supporting autonomy of humans means sometimes they don’t do everything the way you would and that’s ok.

“Racism is only racism if the government does it—individuals cannot practice racism” that’s what some of you sound like with eugenics right now (eugenics is literally racism btw)

The left sure has a lot of fascist values when it comes to disabled people.

@maecaeron "disabled children require special care and attention" being disqualifying for life is coercion and justification for removal of disabled people on a societal scale.

yes, these rhetoric is harmful to disabled people but none of it is what's happening with the youtuber in question, they just had an abortion after making an informed decision based on their abilities as a family. Disabled children require a different level of care and children,
moon meow 🌙@Moonbae222

We can be pro choice and also acknowledge that the “better off dead/never born” “your life is too miserable to be worth living” rhetoric is harmful to disabled people.

A few years ago, we made this same eugenic argument about people who were blind or deaf. I'm glad society rejected it. Instead, we developed sign language, we adjusted, created more educational opportunities, and now, technology exists to enable many blind and deaf people to live productive and independent lives. Our history should make us careful about insisting that a person's life is not worth living because of a disability.

Counter argument: It’s evil to carry a pregnancy to term when you find out the child(ren) will have genetic defects that will never enable them be functional adults and require special care all their lives.

this is the way people are talking about why disabled babies should be aborted and when we even ask nicely for you to think about why that’s concerning all you can say is ‘that’s not a pro-choice take’. be serious. if you’re pro-choice and leftist you should wanna analyse this!
Aleph@woke8yearold

I'm trying not to be too edgy here, but the stuff about how people with down's syndrome are so happy is utterly repulsive to me. It's actually gross and horrible for someone to be mentally retarded and never grow up, forever a child due to a broken body and brain

@MollyOShah @barbarismcrit That's what most people are saying, but any form of caring for disabled people is too much for anyone pushing eugenics. Our society coerces these abortions on a broad scale but any crumb of nuance is for sure just an immediate attack, don't bother entertaining it.

@barbarismcrit It’s always like, talk about the real way to reduce people wanting abortions because of possible disabilities by making a society which supports and takes care of people with disabilities and their caregivers, not imposing forced birth

The left wing position on abortion will never have exceptions or caveats no matter how much you twist yourself up trying to make it so. Thank you for your attention to this matter!

abortion is just the tip of the iceberg oon the topic of disability. always about what we can do to eliminate those who are suffering, never about eliminating suffering.

Ableism runs so deep. Socialists/leftists often ‘fail’ as soon as disability comes up - they stop advocating for system / institution changes and start looking at death and carceral measures - the socialism suddenly goes out the window.

If you aren’t ready to potentially have a disabled child then you’re not ready for parenthood. Your child could become disabled at any period in their life.
