Family #caregivers were seen, heard and empowered on Dec. 16 at Camarillo Health Care District's inaugural Family Caregiver Symposium: "The Power of Care." The event was designed to uplift, educate, and empower the family caregivers who dedicate their time, energy and love to supporting others. Brenda Birdwell of Coast Caregiver Resource Center was the keynote speaker, talking about compassion fatigue, post-traumatic caregiving and ambiguous loss. A caregiver panel featured Janice Aharon-Ezer of Community Memorial Healthcare Caregiver Navigation Program, Michelle Rios of Coast Caregiver Resource Center and Jordana Lawrence of the Alzheimer's Association. Dani Klein Modisett, founder of Laughter on Call," was a special presenter, sharing "Finding Humor in the Everyday." Our Caregivers Support Group is intended for those who are on the journey with a parent, spouse, friend, neighbor and others, who have a chronic condition requiring care such as dementia, Parkinson's or other illnesses. Methods taught in this course focus on health education, such as nutrition and fall prevention, knowledge of fall risks, ways to reduce falls, health activation, and aspects of cognition. Have you fallen? Are you worried about falling? Learn how to prevent falls, discuss safety techniques to reduce concerns and set goals for increasing activity in our 8-week series. You'll create action planners addressing behavioral, environmental and physiological factors that affect your risk for falls, and participate in prompted open discussions surrounding falls. The Camarillo Health Care District, in partnership with @VCAAAging and @CityCamarillo, provides a home-delivered meal option for homebound residents age 60 and older. Supplemental, ready-to-heat entrees are delivered by caring staff. These meals provide a diverse and balanced low-sodium diet designed by the VCAAA Registered Dietitian. Sides such as whole wheat bread, fruit, yogurt and milk are also included. The program also assists in the overall safety of clients with periodic visits to assess welfare and to provide referrals to additional services as needed. Our BALANCEfit and POWERfit programs aim to reduce your risk of falling and are currently being offered for free. Studies have shown cognitive-motor dual-task training, which is a focus of both programs, is beneficial to improving balance and executive function, therefore reducing overall fall risk. Furthermore, with the addition of resistance training in POWERfit, muscle strength improves and that can help with balance and reduce falls. When muscles are stronger, we are less likely to fall, which is a major public health concern in older adults. Dementia Live is a high-impact, dementia simulation experience that immerses participants into life with dementia, resulting in a deeper understanding of what it’s like to live with cognitive impairment and sensory change. Participants are outfitted in specialized gear and given a series of tasks to perform. The challenges and struggles one faces become very real to the participant, triggering heightened empathy and understanding, creating a catalyst for meaningful communication and improving quality of care.
