@mbauwens it’s a very interesting conversation for sure. i am staunchy against transhumanism and think thiel is a bit naive/shortsighted, bc folks like dr joe dispenza show us that radical self transformation might actually work better the other way — first the spirit then the body.

To understand what I mean, independently of the decentralized nature of the tech, is more like a unfortunate political and sociological expression of the educated class as it exists today under the conditions of 'very late capitalism'. I'm assuming, given the social milieu attracted to these platforms, it is not a problem that can rapidly be solved. BUT, since it is actually so difficult to do in the current moment of cultural disintegration, people are moving to more confidential cozyweb tech such as telegram or signal groups, and foregoing more public forms of debate. @mbauwens @nunet_global Does not sound confused indeed. Thanks for elaborating. I've also seen tolerant discourse moving to closed microcommunities. It seems when a public network becomes militarized (financially/regulatory) then (ironically) communities will create their own mini-versions inside of it.

Realisation thanks to @mbauwens: The ActivityPub protocols allows commenting & following users regardless of platform. Basically un-enshittified internet right? But Mastodon adds de)federation/banning-features on top of that. Result: some people get cold (re-enshittified) feet

It's ironic how open protocols (like ActivityPub) can be completely misrepresented by its adopters & endusers (Mastodon & dictator-communities e.g.) The chicken-egg problem is that you need them to promote it 😅

I am aware it's pluralistic (in its own way) and that Mastodon instances are autonomous and can decide 'on their own' what is acceptable or not. I am just saying that these communities are subject to the cultural pressures of the day; and that distributed technological infrastructures are subject to these human limitations. You can have a fully distributed collection of mini-dictatorships. To each her own, I stay away of these aggressively normative communities and prefer internal pluralism of speech.

@mbauwens @nunet_global Mastodon instances can decide very little, think of it as email-account providers. In the fediverse an individual follows individuals (not communities) located elsewhere (on twitter, mastodon-instances, peertube, reddit etc).

@mbauwens @nunet_global I guess Jem was banned by a particular administrator of an instance (twitter: central , mastodon: many). Jem doesn't need that, any wordpressblog or raspberry pi can be used to broadcast to the fediverse/Mastodon, because of the uncensorable ActivityPub protocol.
