I worked in an office before Covid, then worked from home until 2025. Going back to an office this past year, everyone is sniffing on the bus all the time and I’m sick every couple months. It didn’t used to be like this. Why is everyone sick all the time now?!

I just got back from a trip to San Jose. The downtown area is an absolute ghost town, a dead city. I travel to cities all over the country and the world, and I've never seen anything like this before. It feels post-apocalyptic. My Uber driver says it's been getting progressively worse, and he decided to give me a demonstration. We stopped in the middle of a major intersection, in the middle of downtown, in the middle of the day, in the middle of the week, on a sunny day in April, and we got out and walked around the car. It was like Cillian Murphy walking around London in the beginning of 28 Days later. There were pigeons. That's it. And apparently at $250k/year San Jose has the highest average cost of living in the entire country, above even SF? It was a nice trip, though. Just a bit surreal.

People forget what a small town San Francisco is. 800k people, only 220k of which in tech. With the average job stint lasting 2.5, that's 88k people on the market every year. OAI and Anthropic each hiring ~4k in 2026 -- 10% of the entire market, from 2 companies.

Supposedly the Caltrain shares tracks with other rail services so it's not inconceivable that it has become oversubscribed... AFAIK Cubic Transportation Systems is a very legacy company (think POS systems, Windows CE, etc) and that entire development methodology is basically "what if the Web was designed by PLC engineers". Not surprised at the problems there. It's a completely parallel and non intersecting software path to mobile, web, and modern backend.

It amazes me that the Caltrain can be late and the clipper card system incredibly broken Youre telling me they couldnt find two tier 1 software engineers in SF whose main interests are trains and efficiency? Thats like half of SF
