“We are shining the light on the shadowy practices of the charter industry.” — CTU Vice President Jackson Potter Charter operators like Acero have hoarded millions in public dollars while claiming they have to close 7 campuses because of lack of funds. For too long, CPS charter oversight has failed—allowing privatization, financial mismanagement, and anti-union retaliation to go unchecked. But on Thursday, the Chicago Board of Education voted to change that. The Board passed a landmark resolution to demand real transparency and accountability from charter schools. This vote is a direct response to the findings in our new report, ”Unchartered Territory”, and to the organizing led by parents, students and educators demanding change. We reveal the truth about the charter industry's dark money, shady vendor deals, and hoarded reserves. Acero alone had nearly $50 million in reserves—while they tell their students their sports programs will be cut. We’re calling out the corporate playbook that mimics Elon Musk and Donald Trump, funneling public funds into private pockets while silencing student, parent, and educator voices. This win is just the beginning.
