It’s time for legislation that ensures patients can consult with the doctors they trust, regardless of hospital "privileges." $275 billion a year. That’s what taxpayers spend keeping nonprofit hospitals tax-exempt, bond-financed, and solvent. The same hospitals that spend $29 million a year lobbying against government involvement in healthcare. The subsidy and the opposition come from the same balance sheet. On a Friday in front of the US Capitol, I find that genuinely interesting.

10,000 American doctors are sitting on the sidelines every year because they can’t find a residency spot. Meanwhile, states like Texas are passing laws to streamline the process for foreign-trained doctors to fill the gap. While we certainly need medical coverage in rural areas, why aren't we prioritizing the doctors we're already training right here at home?

The 340B drug pricing program was created to help safety-net hospitals serve low-income patients. Today, some of the wealthiest hospital systems in America hold 340B status. They purchase drugs at a 25-50% discount. They bill payers at full price. The spread is theirs. No requirement to pass it to patients. A program designed to subsidize the vulnerable became a revenue line for the affluent. The program generated $54 billion in eligible purchases in 2023. Nobody required a public accounting of where the discount went.
