2 years ago, when the Taliban invaded our country, I was paroled to the US through OWA. I was fortunate to meet with @Prof_LMHarris, who graciously took on the responsibility of filing my Asylum application. In December 2021, I underwent an extensive 8-hour questioning session with the Asylum Officer to prove that I qualified as a Person At Risk during my evacuation on one of the military planes. The decision-making process has now exceeded way beyond the 150-day requirement set by Congress. In January 2023, I was called for a follow-up interview, & it has been 5 months since then, with my application still listed as "Pending" on the USCIS website. During this period, Prof. Harris has sent several follow-up emails, & 2 congressmen have contacted the Asylum Office, but there has been no change in the status of my application. And here, I find myself as a stateless human being, without any legal status in my host country. Despite the challenges, life goes on, & I remain resilient in the pursuit of a successful future. On this #RefugeeDay, let us stand in solidarity with refugees worldwide. May we advocate for fair and timely asylum processes, support integration efforts, & celebrate the resilience & contributions of refugees in their new communities.
