Kinda proud of myself, during my vacation I managed to finish 5 books, 15 comics, and even listened to my entire vinyl collection. Right now I’m reading The Long Game Next on my list is Artemis, once I find out what Shane and Ilya are up to in The Long Game. Gosh, I read so much… What I finished: Common Goal, Project Hail Mary, Role Model, I’m Glad My Mom Died, and a reread of Heated Rivalry. I also somehow made it through about three longer fanfictions. And I tried practicing mindfulness… but I’m bad at it lol

One thing that really started to bother me is how often he frames things in a very negative or overly political way. For example, there was an episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds where Pike, La’an, and Uhura temporarily turned into Vulcans, and he called it “space racism.” Moments like that made it hard to just enjoy things without constantly overanalyzing them. He even prides himself on that mindset, saying you always have to look beyond the entertainment and analyze the politics behind it. I understand where that perspective comes from, but when everything turns into constant analysis and critique, it just becomes exhausting. I don’t think I’m made for that kind of approach to media. I’m much more intuitive in how I engage with things, and I don’t think that’s inherently wrong or less valid. But when I say that, he tends to dismiss it or respond in a way that makes me feel like I have no media literacy at all. And that just doesn’t sit right with me.

Thank you all for your kind comments and messages, I really appreciate it. It’s still a bit rough, and I’m honestly pretty angry and frustrated with the person I was into. They’re kind of a professional yapper. I used to find that charming, but now it just comes across as exhausting. It often feels like every topic turns into a lecture or analysis, and that gets tiring. I know I was definitely wearing heart-shaped glasses, but looking at it now, I don’t think we would have been a good match. He tends to see politics and deeper meaning in almost everything and brings it up very frequently. I understand that, in a broader sense, many things can be interpreted as political. But not everything needs to be treated that way in every moment. Sometimes things can simply exist without being overanalyzed. For example, when I create boot-licking art, it’s not meant as a political statement. It’s a kink and something I enjoy. There isn’t some deeper message behind it. Of course, I’m aware that being able to create that kind of art safely is a privilege. But constantly pointing that out takes away from the creative aspect and turns it into something heavier than it needs to be. He can come across as a bit of a know-it-all, and I genuinely don’t know how I didn’t notice it earlier. I’m not sure if it’s really that bad or if I’m just emotional right now, but it’s starting to feel like this might not even work on a friendship level.

I have nothing against the artists who take these deals or followers who want to support them through the affiliate links. It’s just such an ick to see companies simultaneously devalue artists and their work while also clearly acknowledging that the art will help their business.

It’s just slimy to me. I’ll never support a business if I have the suspicion they’re pulling that sort of thing.

Like you’re telling me that your multimillion dollar business isn’t booming enough to pay the professional artists that spend hours or days creating your product illustrations?

And here’s the part that makes this even more frustrating (at least for me): marketing costs are a normal business expense. Brands can write them off. Paying creators properly isn’t some kind of „100% loss“, it’s literally part of how business works. So why is it still so common to push for “free” work? Fair pay leads to better content, more transparency, and way more authentic collaborations. If you actually believe in your product, invest in the people who bring it to life. Maybe it’s just me, but I literally work in marketing/ the commercial industry, and this isn’t some radical take, I t’s what I studied, it’s what I am working in since I graduated Uni 2022. Respect the work. Respect the artist. Respect the process.

For the next brand that wants to work with me: If it’s unpaid, just say that upfront in your first message. Don’t hide behind words like “collab” or “follower exchange” or “engagement share.” It’s honestly wild to me that some people create multiple comic pages in exchange for a toy and a bit of affiliate exposure. You’re seriously underselling yourself, your art is worth way more than a product or two, especially when it’s being used for commercial purposes.

Wildly popular sex toy companies asking for unpaid comics/illustrations featuring their product and offering only an affiliate link as “payment” is insane to me
