About 20 Years ago, Irene Ndibo returned to Kenya from US, where she was a high profile Vice President in Goldman Sachs. She came to be a founder executive of Renaissance Capital. She wanted a lawyer to advise her & Caroline Mutoko referred her to me. Irene was the cleverest girl I ever met. She was a woman ahead of her time. But Kenya as always ready wasn’t ready for highly prodigious people like her. Irene understood private equity more than anyone in Kenya. Yet we didn’t use her. Irene was let down by her country. She died relatively young. Irene was super clever, beautiful & elegant. With excellent prose. FARE THEE WELL IRENE!

This 440-km four-lane expressway connecting Nairobi and Mombasa is set to be one of Kenya’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, enhancing trade efficiency, cutting travel time, and unlocking economic opportunities. For me, this is more than just an infrastructure project-it’s a bold step towards reshaping Kenya’s economy through private-sector-led investments. It proves the power of domestic institutional capital in driving economic growth. For the first time in Africa, local owners of capital are investing over $1 Billion in their own infrastructure. Usahihi exemplifies my belief that Africa must transition from aid to trade on the path to self-reliance.
