Am I overreacting for being upset that my girlfriend keeps doing things that hurt me but says it’s not a big deal? Every time I bring it up, she says Why are you thinking so much Just let it go So I let it go. Again and again. What I didn’t realize was this I was training her. No consequences for bad behavior. No reward for good behavior. From her perspective, nothing needed to change. That is literally Reinforcement Learning. In Reinforcement Learning, an agent learns by interacting with an environment and receiving rewards or penalties. The agent does not understand morality, intent, or effort. It only understands signals. If an action leads to no negative consequence, that action gets reinforced. Core components of RL: Agent The decision maker. Environment Everything the agent interacts with. State The current situation. Action A choice the agent makes. Reward Feedback from the environment. The goal is not to be nice. The goal is to maximize long term reward. This is why immediate rewards can be dangerous. If you reward short term peace by staying silent, you teach the system that silence works. To measure how good an action is, we use a Q value. Q(s, a) is the expected future reward of taking action a in state s. Learning happens through updates. Q(s, a) ← Q(s, a) + α [ r + γ max Q(s’, a’) − Q(s, a) ] Alpha controls how fast old beliefs change. Gamma controls how much the future matters. If gamma is low, the agent becomes impulsive. If gamma is high, the agent becomes strategic. One more crucial concept. Exploration vs exploitation. Should the agent try something new. Or repeat what already works. In life, if you never explore, you stay stuck. If you explore forever, you never settle. Deep fact. The agent is never wrong. The reward function is.
