@HairyLeggdHarpy True Chand is irrelevant to the Olympic's decision and the article should not have mentioned her

I can't think of a dsd where a girl reaches puberty, starts periods normally, is oblivious to anything unusual, becomes an elite athlete and suddenly in adulthood discovers she has an SRY gene due to a cheek swab. "No idea" What type of DSD is Brian thinking of, I wonder... 🤔

Genetic test. Athletes who may have had no idea will now be labeled as the public as “male” Others may refuse to participate in the Olympics and therefore testing and will then also be labeled as likely male and trying to hide something. I understand the intent for fairness in sport, but this is going to have serious repercussions (including US athletes) that I don’t think the sports world is ready for

@h2ner I promise you, even in rural villages all the girls menstruate. There is not a single girl who doesn't menstruate and isn't aware of that being a problem. Chand will have been fully aware of never having a period, not once AND being an extraordinary athlete...

@h2ner No, it didn't. Dutee Chand did not get periods at puberty. Or ever. That's my point. If you are xy you don't menstruate. It's never a big surprise.

Does anyone know about very good books about topics like biology, biochemistry, anatomy that are not pop-science slop, but also not dry textbooks, but a magical third thing in the middle?

BAP's article has injected more life into this sphere than I've seen in months

@h2ner pretty much, maybe it can be like onlyfans models all promoting each other and we let every specimen be a new species, so everyone gets on the cover and some press

maybe this seems obvious to others, but the way we treat species in hominin evolution isnt consistent with other areas. speciation ordinarily is denoted by reproductive incompatibility between two groups, they cannot produce viable offspring

@Local_Origins1 Yeah it’s super annoying and it’s probably only done so that the finders of the fossil get to erect their own species and be on the cover of Nature. No one wants to find the one thousandth afarensis mandible

@h2ner im probably on the lumper side, when I see stuff like homo daliensis or bodoensis it just annoys me a bit. I tried at some point to make my own numbered system to assign species but that didn't work

@Local_Origins1 Neandertals have such similar morphology across space&time they are probably the best candidate for a paleospecies and yet we bred with them. I think after 2010 every academic has allowed for the possibility of interbreeding between any two contemporaneous “species” bc of this

@Local_Origins1 Yeah definitely no consensus and it seems to depend highly on just like personal temperament (are you a lumper or a splitter). I like when people don’t even use species names and only refer to specimen IDs

@Local_Origins1 @Phillip05166897 Neandertal introgression dates are pretty certain. >50k Asia&Oceania was late erectus/denisovan that mostly died out with some absorbed into Homo sapiens. None of these are necessarily hills I’ll die on but seems to be where the evidence points johnhawks.net/p/when-and-how…

I have some questions for the current out of africa view, around the timeline. but first I will lay out what their view is to make sure I am not misunderstanding anything. it would be a waste of time to question things they don't believe.
