Phần lớn bộ phim là quá trình điều tra và tố tụng xem người vợ có phải là thủ phạm không, từ đó mở ra những góc khuất trong đời sống hôn nhân giữa hai vợ chồng Sandra. Mục tiêu của phim không phải là tìm ra hung thủ, mà là "giải phẫu" đời sống hôn nhân cũng như sự nghiệp sáng tạo, cụ thể ở đây là văn chương. Hay hoàn chỉnh hơn, thứ tạo nên cú rơi của Samuel có thể là gia đình và sự nghiệp. Ngoài ra, đương nhiên cũng không thể không nhắc đến yếu tố tranh tụng bao gồm hai bên bào chữa và buộc tội rất kịch tính, khuyến khích ai học luật nên xem cho quen dần.
