Currently, the newly-configured Bug Creek Pack appears to be 3 wolves: the daughter of the white-tipped female and the two Birch Bark males. The more we do this research, the more we realize how dynamic and ever-changing wolf packs are. This is just one small example of such change!

This effectively ended the Birch Bark Pack because Birch Bark, which was only 3 wolves to begin with (a breeding pair and a subordinate male), merged with Bug Creek. Notably, we do not know what happened to the breeding female of Birch Bark but she is not around anymore.

We do not know what happened to the white-tipped female’s mate in the Bug Creek Pack but he disappeared from the pack around the same time the female was ousted. Her daughter’s mate is a male from the Birch Bark Pack, the pack that was easterly adjacent to the Bug Creek Pack last summer. Through some string of events, the two males (breeding male and subordinate male) from the Birch Bark Pack left their territory in late fall and joined this female in the Bug Creek Pack.

We captured the old white-tipped female by herself on several trail cameras throughout the fall and winter, and even saw her in person on two occasions. In all observations, she was by herself. For many years, she was the dominant wolf but in an instant, she became a lone wolf, resigned to roam and wander. Such is the fate of many dominant, breeding wolves if they live long enough.

The cause of this female’s “downfall”, if you want to call it that, was her daughter. Instead of dispersing from the pack, her daughter stuck around in the Bug Creek Pack for 4.5 years biding her time, until she was able to usurp and remove her mother from the breeding role. After waiting many years, her daughter decided to make her move for the top spot this fall, and ousted her mother.

During her time as the dominant female, she reared at least 16 pups to adulthood with an average of 3.5 pups reared per year during 2021-2024, a pup survival rate around 70%. By contrast, the average breeding female only successfully rears 29% of pups to adulthood in our area. Last year, the Bug Creek pack had several pups but all evidence indicates they did not survive.

After 5 years at the helm of the Bug Creek Pack, the tenure of this breeding female—the only wolf we have ever studied with a white-tipped tail—has come to an end.
