In the south of France, cherry farmers light fires beneath the trees to keep the frost away. A fragile season protected by flame and a beautiful sight to see.

Is that Van Gogh? 🧐 Van Gogh often painted café life in Asnières, the industrial suburb north-west of Paris. Check out the small figure on the left: a white top, blue trousers, and what looks like a straw hat. He is even wearing a blue worker’s smock, like the one Vincent is known to have worn. What do you think, could this be him? 🖼️ ‘Restaurant Rispal at Asnières (Le restaurant Rispal à Asnières)’, 1887 © The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

Are you an adventurer like Van Gogh? In his life and in his art, Van Gogh always tried to better himself, even if it meant venturing into unknown territory. Despite lacking formal training, he relentlessly pursued his artistic vision. ✍️ ‘Anyone who has a solid position elsewhere, let him stay where he is but for adventurers as myself I think they lose nothing in risking more.’ Van Gogh’s journey reminds us that taking risks and embracing challenges can lead to growth and discovery. Perhaps, like him, we can find meaning in stepping into the unknown. 🖼️ ‘Seascape at Saintes-Maries’, 1888 © Pushkin Museum

📚 After two years in Paris, Van Gogh longed for the countryside. This still life might be a farewell to the city, and to Theo. The Venus torso might nod to his early studies, the rose to Theo’s love life, and the books to Vincent’s favourite novels. 🖼️ © Kröller-Müller Museum

Feeling blue? 💙 If there’s a day for it, it might be today: #BlueMonday, often described as one of the most depressing days of the year. Let’s get through it together with some blue Van Gogh artworks. Which one is your favourite? 1 'Self-Portrait', 1887 © Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art 2 'The Starry Night', 1889 © MoMa 3 'Almond Blossom', 1890 © Van Gogh Museum 4 ‘Imperial Fritillaries in a Copper Vase’, 1887 ©️ Musée d’Orsay

‘I’d rather paint people’s eyes than cathedrals, for there’s something in the eyes that isn’t in the cathedral – although it’s solemn and although it’s impressive. To my mind, the soul of a person [...] is more interesting.’ Vincent wrote to his brother Theo.

Let’s zoom in! In ‘The Bridge at Courbevoie’, Van Gogh captured a lively scene along the Seine in just one sitting. Instead of perfect perspective or precise figures, he focused on shimmering reflections and playful details. Look closely: those colourful dashes of paint are Van Gogh’s own twist on Pointillism. He was inspired by artists like Seurat and Signac, who were among the first to use the technique of painting with dots in various colours. Side by side, layer upon layer – they make the water sparkle ✨🌊

Happy holidays! 🎄 Vincent didn’t receive many presents, but he never forgot small acts of care and kindness. Wishing you warmth, light, and the kind of gifts that can’t be wrapped. 💛
