A lot has changed. Just look at how beneficial a 3:46 minute clip can be. Those scholars of the past were deeply committed to delivering messages that could transform people’s lives for the better. Everyone in that gathering listened as though it might be the last reminder they would ever hear. Plus the adabiyyah was entering my soul. Allahus samad

ACRONYM, ABBREVIATION, INITIALISM. Read to learn 👇🏽👇🏽👇🏽 VISA is actually not an acronym or abbreviation. It’s a Backronym. A backronym is when people take a word or phrase that already exists and try to force a full sentence into its letters. The word "Visa" comes from the Latin phrase "charta visa" meaning "paper that has been seen." It’s a noun. Here is a short lesson for those who care to read. Most people use "Acronym" and "Abbreviation" like they’re the same thing, but in reality, they aren’t even on the same street. Think of an Abbreviation as a word haircut. You’re just cutting the tail off to save space, but you still pronounce the full name. Examples: Gov. Sanwo-Olu, Gen. Musa, or Prof. Soyinka. An Acronym, however, is a new identity. The first letters of a group of words fuse together to create a brand new word you can actually pronounce. Examples: JAMB, LASPOTECH, or NAPTIP. You don't spell them out letter-by-letter, you say them as one single word. If you have to call out the letters one by one, like EFCC, FCT, or DSS, that’s technically an Initialism. Shortened word = Abbreviation (Dr.) Pronounced like a word = Acronym (UNILAG) Pronounced as letters = Initialism (N-P-F) Stop calling everything an abbreviation. Class don end. INALEGWU.

There is something we Muslims don’t really acknowledge or talk about enough, and that’s the effort reverts put into learning the Islam. We celebrate their shahadah videos. We share “welcome to Islam” posts. But we rarely talk about what comes after. This afternoon at work, I walked into the prayer room for Zuhr and saw a brother already praying. He had two rakahs left, so I quietly joined him. While we were praying, I noticed a faint sound playing in the background. It sounded like it was coming from his phone or maybe a EarPods, but I wasn’t too certain. After we finished, I completed the remaining two rakahs and I joined the next people that were about to pray Asr. He didn’t leave straight away and sat at the back of the room. He waited until I completed my prayer, then approached me. He looked apologetic and said “This is the first time someone joined me in prayer and he wasn’t sure if I did it correctly.” He mentioned he was following the recitation through his headset and seemed genuinely concerned that he might have made a mistake with how he led the prayer, being the first time. You could tell he had been thinking about it throughout. I told him he did everything right. I told him I heard a faint sound playing in the background but couldn’t tell if it was him. I asked for his name and had a little chat about work. I could see the relief in his face. What stood out to me wasn’t the technical correctness of his prayer but the sincerity and effort behind it. He was so conscious about pleasing Allah, and not offending others in how he prayed, that he waited just to make sure he hadn’t done something wrong and to seek correction. He wasn’t casual about it. He wasn’t indifferent. He was intentional about it. How many of us, born into Islam, carry that same conscious humility and intentionality? We rarely speak about the weight reverts carry. The courage it takes to choose Islam. The discipline it takes to learn from scratch, the pronunciation, movements, rulings. The quiet practice sessions. The YouTube video on repeat. The earphones or phone in prayer because they are still learning. The quiet effort, the nervousness, the private struggle and striving to get it right. We don’t talk about that effort enough! There is no time I listen to, read about, or meet a revert that I don’t learn from them. Today encounter reminded me that guidance isn’t just about accepting Islam, it’s about striving every single day to grow in it to please Allah, and not wrong others. May Allah make reverts and all striving Muslims steadfast upon this religion. May He reward our hidden effort, anxious questions out of sincerity, and grant us the understanding of it.

A few days ago, I wrote here that there appeared to be an agenda against Alaafin Owoade. Little did I know that it went far beyond him. There is now a deliberate attempt to discredit the legacy of Alaafin Adeyemi III, an effort which, in the words of Ibikunle Ogunsina, seeks to paint him as a dubious character, rubbish his commitment to inclusiveness, and distort not only Oyo history but Yoruba history as a whole. Oyo is now being described as a “dead empire,” yet many Yoruba kings insist on the title Imperial Majesty despite there being no historical evidence that their domains ever constituted an empire. Oyo is no longer an empire; it is a town. But it carries the remnants and weight of a historically significant empire, one that stands as proof that Africans were capable of greatness, expansion, and sophisticated governance, contrary to what external forces that invaded and disrupted our history would have us believe. The Oyo Empire is good reference that Yoruba was once the dominant power in West Africa, stretching from the Niger River to the Atlantic coast in present-day Nigeria and Benin, covering over 150,000 square kilometers. Glorifying Oyo’s history does not diminish other Yoruba communities. A significant portion of Yoruba history is preserved in the journey of the Alaafin institution itself, shaped by lessons from Oranyan, Sango, Basorun Gaa, Aole, Atiba etc. Oyo had the greatest empire among Yoruba-speaking people and played a central role in promoting Yoruba civilization. Ife is our source and the cradle of Yoruba civilization. Ibadan preserved that civilization from the aggression of the Fulani jihad. The Egbas, Awori, Ede, Ogbomoso and other Yoruba speaking people all contributed to what is Yoruba history today. Discrediting any of these towns is, ultimately, a distortion of our collective Yoruba history. One thing that can never be taken away from my father, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, is his deep love for Yoruba culture and for Oyo. He was a controversial man, yes but he loved his heritage, embraced it fully, and promoted it unapologetically. He wore his culture as a badge of honor. False narratives about him will not stand.

You really underestimate Oriyomi Hamzat. You also assume the masses wants to hear intelligent talks. If na by intelligent talk, Bisi Ilaka with his spre spre English will be winning elections. Aside Ajimobi, which of our governors is really eloquent. Oriyomi will be reading English from a book. Talk something else abeg. We might not like the man. But facts are facts.
Daveman@Daveman_

Being on radio every day doesn’t mean he can contribute intelligently to governance discussions, if he should become Governor today he will be reading most of his English speeches from book
