I’m turning 40 on Friday. So I’m giving away 40 @WoodiesOfficial from my vault. 🌳 Twice in my professional life I’ve been presented with “watershed” decisions - one that will clearly fork your life into two available paths. 👈👉 The first was in 2015 - stay the course and climb the corporate ladder, or take a high risk shot at building something that’s never been done before. I chose the latter over the ladder. The second was in 2021 - post acquisition of the ‘15 startup, stay the course and climb the corporate ladder, or take a high risk to build Woodies in a new space with new tech and a group of strangers from the internet. I chose the latter over the ladder. In both cases, I chose the riskier path. Why? 🤌 Because you only get one shot at this life. My reasoning has always boiled down to one internal question: ✨ …“when you’re 40/50/60/70/80/90 years old, will you look back and be inspired by yourself for attempting to achieve your most audacious goals, or will you have regret then for passing on them now.” ✨ I think many believe that a great idea is a starting point, but in my experience great ideas are just the next door in a series of doors you’re moving through (iteration). But, if you don’t decide to step through the first door, you’ll never be aware of the doors that may have followed. 🚪 When Woodies presented itself as a watershed moment, I quit my career to pursue Web3 full time. Gave notice the same day. 🚪 That decision introduced me to @chriswallace, @grelysian, @DesLucrece, and so many incredibly talented and inspiring people. 🚪 One in particular is @calvinhoenes. Calvin and I were the nerds behind Woodies. We had never met before then. 🚪 We are now embarking on year 3 @props with @nestarobins, @KevinNuest, @OmbraRD, and @getfreddie. 🚪 Choosing the Woodies door led to another, and to another, and to another. 🚪👉🚪 👉 🚪 👉🚪 👉 ❓ This is all to say, kids, take some shots with the time you have on this Earth. Build/join a startup if that’s your thing. Make art. Find common interests with strangers from the internet and IRL. Venture out from your tribes. Embrace risk. Laugh in the face of fear and the status quo of doing what’s safe. Lose, a lot, so that you may learn what is most important in your life and worth protecting (good reasons for taking the safe paths), and what you personally need to win (driving confidence to consider the riskier paths). I’m so glad I did - 40 year old me is 100% inspired by 32 year old and 37 year old me. I hope 50 year old me is inspired by 40 year old me too, and I’m excited to reflect back at 50 on which doors I am not yet aware of yet but will make that inspiration possible.
