Token Farming Incident and What It Taught Us
1/ Let us walk through the npm token farming incident that targeted tea rewards. It is a useful case study in economics plus security.
2/ Researchers found over 150 thousand packages that were spammy, low value, and clearly automated. The goal was not to help anyone. The goal was to appear "active" enough to claim rewards.
3/ This was not traditional malware. It was financial fraud aimed at an incentive system that is meant for real maintainers.
4/ What it taught us
- incentives that matter will be targeted
- simple heuristics are not enough
- provenance and reputation must carry real weight
5/ tea’s response focuses on
- integrating GPG based identity
- valuing long term, verifiable contribution
- de weighting newly created, low trust packages
6/ We are grateful to Amazon, Endor Labs, TechRadar and others who documented the incident. Open source security is teamwork, even when we are looking at uncomfortable data.
7/ The goal is not to pretend we can stop every abuse. The goal is to build a network where it is consistently easier to earn by maintaining real software than by spamming registries.
