@CultrHack Why are we still here? I ask myself this (it takes me beyond my immediate field). I only have this work account left. And tweet much less. But humanities academia needs to decide where to decamp to, as science academia already has. And then we need to persuade our institutions.

“The wealth of the 10 richest people in the world--a list dominated by US tech billionaires--increased by a record amount after Trump’s presidential victory”: $64bn, largest daily increase in more than a decade. $26.5bn of it went into Elon Musk’s accounts theguardian.com/business/2024/…

This! Do uni’s want their PhD graduates (usually scrabbling for any job to stabilise finances after completion) to have the best chance of turning their PhD research into top quality articles, framed by the latest literature? If so, do this.
Dr Lizzie Swarbrick 🇵🇸@LizzieSwarbrick

There’s one easy thing that universities could do to make their PhD graduates more successful and employable. Just give them online library access rights for a few years/life. It seems like such an easy win. There’s probably a tech reason why it would be unmanageable but…

@best2vilmabanky It really is jaw dropping. I visited for the first time this summer when in Amsterdam for a conference. Look forward to returning.

I’m so excited to have just come across this 100 year-old snapshot in a trade magazine showing my dream cinema, the glorious Tuschinski Amsterdam. Still exhibiting today & I have drunk in the detail & watched films there, but back in October 1924 premiering the latest Pola Negri.

@dieworkwear I see what they are doing with the dial and hands, but a reconditioned 1960s Seiko would be much nicer and vastly cheaper.

@routledgebooks @tandfonline Perhaps it's time for us academics to do what we do best... filibuster those research deadlines! "So sorry for the late reply, I've been rushed off my feet, can we move the draft to end April? I'll have a teaching-free week" etc etc

@routledgebooks @tandfonline This sets a worrying precedent, with the potential of published research being rushed through so that it can be fed into the LLMs in time. Which means lower research quality AND AI companies shaping the quality of published research AND rushed research being used to train LLMs..

UPDATE: yesterday @routledgebooks @tandfonline told all staff that it's extra important to meet 2024 targets as they have promised the LLM companies a quota of books for them to digest to train their AIs. So if your editor is pushing you to meet that deadline, this is why!
Dr Ruth Alison Clemens@RuthieClems

Just found out that Taylor & Francis has sold access to all @routledgebooks data to Microsoft to train their AI. This includes my publications. I get no payment for using my research labour, never mind the bigger problems of this energy-intensive extractivism...

"After making her mark as a film journalist in Britain and a publicity and film sales manager in the Netherlands, she found fame as the manager of art house cinemas, notably the Academy in London, playing a huge part in spreading the appreciation of film as art in the 1930s."
Luke McKernan@lukemckernan

Delighted to say that I have written two new profiles of silent era women for the @WFPProject. First is a major yet overlooked figure, Elsie Cohen - pioneering film journalist and manager of legendary art house cinema The Academy wfpp.columbia.edu/pioneer/elsie-…

As we share the dates for Cinema Rediscovered 2025 (Wed 23 - Sun 27 July), look back at this summer c/o filmmaker @arthurcauty which captures what the festival is all about – bringing people together to celebrate the rediscovery and revival of great films on the big screen.

Lauren Bacall would have turned 100 today. In 1946, she was immortalized in the WB cartoon, Bacall to Arms. They don't make cartoons like this anymore. 😂

These past three years, I've taken to using the first day of teaching to assess how I'm coping with the old brain damage (on today's showing: badly). This poking out at Cash Converters felt like a bit of a sign:

@donsheldon @michaelharriot Not ALL the UK answer are curry. If I still lived in Edinburgh I’d say fish and chips with salt n’ sauce, obviously. (And of course fried fish and chips is also immigrant/colonialism food)

Someone comes to your city for the 1st time. You have to recommend 1 meal that most represents your city. (Not necessarily THE BEST restaurant, but a place that defines your city’s taste & culture) 1. What city are you in? 2. Where do you send them? 2. What should they order?

Men at Work’s “Down Under” is a perfect pop song And Colin Hay’s singing, especially his adlibs, is terribly underrated the moment in the 3rd chorus when he answers “oh, yeah-yeah” to the “do u come from a land down under?” question is just sooo good and the closing is 🤌🏾🤌🏾

Quite relieved to find this at the start of chapter 2. (It's a 7-chapter abridgement of a 15-chapter original, and really feels like it. Very nice release from Grapevine though – lovely print and score.)
