One of the most remarkable stories of change in India has been the successful effort to bring most children into schools. To understand how many children in a particular educational level are in school, we look at a measure called the enrolment ratio. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) is the number of children enrolled in an education level relative to their population. Over time, the GER in India has risen across all education levels, but most substantially at the elementary level (Grades 1-8). At the primary level (Grades 1 to 5), India's gross enrolment ratio is now more than 100%. This is  a result of some underage or overage children being enrolled in primary classes. Even at the upper primary level (Grades 6-8), the gross enrolment ratio has reached 95% as of 2021. Beyond the overall growth in enrolment ratios lies yet another significant achievement - the closing of the gender gap in enrolment. In 1951, fewer than three in ten girls were enrolled at the primary level of education against six in ten for boys. At the upper primary level, girls were virtually absent - less than 5% were enrolled. This gap has now been closed; an equal or slightly higher proportion of female students as compared to male students are now enrolled at both stages. #WATCH | Muscat, Oman | "We had some gorgeous sunrises, moonrises, but we also had rain and storms...Indian Navy crew is amazing," says INSV Kaundinya crew member & PM- Economic Advisory Council member, Sanjeev Sanyal, as he narrates his 18-day experience on board the vessel's maiden international voyage from Gujarat's Porbandar to Oman's Muscat. "Absolutely thrilled to be here. It has been a dream. It is not just about being at sea for 18 days; it is about something that goes back 5 years. The ship behaved itself very well. I think people underestimate the technologies used by ancient Indians and mariners. Without the Prime Minister's encouragement, this could not have started. The Ministry of Culture financed this project. The Indian Navy which supervised the building of the ship and then crewed it for this voyage and the crew...I will return home after this voyage, but the crew will remain here. The ship will be taken out of the water to be checked. After that, the crew will return to India..."

For a voyage like this to succeed, it needed some serious background support. Commodore Amit Srivastava and Capt Prashant Menon of the @indiannavy were the backbones that kept the whole thing running.
