Junk mail provides a major source of my examples of bad graphs. This one shows the need for proofreading.

Major crime is up in NYC, but this graph from the Mayor's budget presentation makes a 7.5% increase seem like a ~200% increase

He is gone. The love of my life, my rock, my partner, and my husband of 17 years lost his battle with cancer today. I will miss you forever, Jay

Without looking at the color bar, can you tell which colors are hotter than others? Now look at the color bar... does it help?

@AllenDowney The purpose of the “odd” scale is to emphasize detail in small differences across the whole range so you can see local detail (in what I take to be cloud top temps—it’s used there). If you used a rainbow scale you wouldn’t see small differences. The right one depends on usage.

@statisticiana @eagereyes @DataRevelations .I guess I haven't been following twitter. I completely missed this thread. The area under a histogram must sum to 100% so what you call the histogram encoding height is not a histogram at all.

Can we talk about histograms for a minute? When I studied statistics, histograms represented data using area. This seems to be forgotten and definitions usually only say height now. Any theories why?
