Extraordinary scenes from northern #Tehran tonight, where the Aqdasiyeh oil depot has been hit & completely engulfed in flames. Apocalyptic — and more #Iran critical infrastructure destroyed beyond repair.

Religious Affairs Minister has no business to threaten syariah charges against Wan Sabrina. 1. Religious affairs minister Naim Mokhtar has threatened to file syariah offence charges against Sabronzo (Wan Sabrina Wan Rosli ) over a music video - allegedly for being “too sexy”. 2. The Minister has no business whatsoever to make such threats. A government minister has no authority to investigate or prosecute citizens. 3. Prosecutions, whether civil or syariah, can only be decided on by the prosecuting authority, after a fair & impartial investigation by the relevant investigative bodies. 4. By launching this tirade against Wan Sabrina, the Minister has publicly shamed her even though she’s not been found guilty of any offence. He has also prejudiced her fundamental right to a fair investigation and trial. 5. This whole backlash against Wan Sabrina & her band is sensationalist & displays a distasteful obsession with female purity, whilst ignoring harmful misogynistic attitudes in society. 6. Anyway, how did the minister decide that this music video was too sexy? Did he watch it? What’s the criteria to decide this? Perhaps he should just “have lowered his gaze”. 7. It would be best if Naim and his Ministry, instead of scrutinising Dolla’s performances, should focus on real problems. For example, thousands of children who are denied citizenship just because their parents marriage documents are not in order. Isn’t defending innocent children our highest religious duty? 16 Nov 2025

For what it’s worth and before non-Thai speakers (and editors) get the wrong impression, this is the actual full quote by Thai PM Anutin: “The points we’ve agreed on that would’ve allowed us to walk towards peace - they are no more. From now on, the Thai govt will do whatever it sees fit to benefit Thailand, do without (the need) to deliberate or to ask (anyone for permission).”

Marwan Barghouti is 66 years old and in his 23rd year in prison. Israel isn’t releasing him. Yet. Nelson Mandela was 66 years old and in his 23rd year in prison when he was offered release if he renounced violence. He refused, saying the government should stop its own violence. Five years later, Mandela walked free.

UPDATE: This morning, Israeli police filed an indictment against Spanish flotilla activist Reyes Rigo Cervilla, with a request for pretrial detention. If granted, this means she will not be immediately released. Rigo Cervilla is accused of assaulting a guard in Ketziot prison. She is currently the only one of 479 people detained with the first flotilla to have been singled out in this way. Eyewitnesses told me that, after days of abuse, Rigo Cervilla, 56, was attacked by guards for defending another woman and advocating for everybody to be allowed mattresses to sleep on. Guards dragged her into a cell by her hair and then threw her in solitary confinement, In videos from court, she can be heard begging for help and whispering that she is being threatened. The six other activists (three Norwegians, two Moroccans and one Nigerian) still detained from the first flotilla are expected to be deported today or tomorrow, along with some of the 145 detained with the second flotilla. Israel has not indicated otherwise, and simply isn't drawing attention to their continued detention. At this stage, it is just Rigo Cervilla who is facing a longer detention.

The Nobel Prize
The Nobel Prize@NobelPrize·
This year’s chemistry laureate Omar Yaghi was born in Amman, Jordan, in 1965 to parents who were refugees from Palestine. When we spoke to him he shared his story: “I grew up in a very humble home, we were a dozen of us in one room, sharing it with the cattle that we used to raise. I was born in a family of refugees, and my parents could barely read or write. My father finished sixth grade and my mother couldn’t read or write. It’s quite a journey. Science allows you to do it. Science is the greatest equalising force in the world. Smart people, talented people, skilled people exist everywhere. That’s why we really should focus on unleashing their potential through providing them with opportunity.” Today Yaghi shared the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Susumu Kitagawa and Richard Robson for their work developing metal–organic frameworks. It’s been quite a journey, science allows you to do it.” New laureate Omar Yaghi was in the middle of changing flights when we reached him, just after he heard that he had been awarded the 2025 #NobelPrize in Chemistry. In this interview we speak about his early life as a refugee in Jordan and the overwhelming draw of the beauty of chemistry: “I set out to build beautiful things and solve intellectual problems.” Listen now:
