Fascinating chat yesterday with an East German welder who worked on the gas pipelines in Siberia in the 80s. A strange world - cut off, working 12h a day under extreme conditions. Some enjoyed the camaraderie and stayed for years, others turned to alcohol. (akg/Reinhard Kaufhold)
