Question in mind - Are Dioramas or posters a good way to assess student learning in HASS or Science, if there is a rubric involved which assesses only the knowledge and not the 'art'? #teacher #Assessment

@greg_ashman I feel Book Week has stopped being about books and now is more about which costume gathers the most eyeballs on social media!! I sound so negative but honestly, it's just too overwhelming for parents and teachers to keep up!

@greg_ashman While we are at this, can I say I stress so much about Book Week parades..My three years of teaching and every year I stress what to 'dress up' as! More than 85% of the kids buy costumes related to movies turned to some picture books and there is no actual 'Books' in Book Week

Teacher humiliation. Dunk tanks. Custard pies. Silly costumes. That sort of thing. I don’t care for it. People worry about respect, and that is a key concern. But I also think there are some pretty weird undercurrents to teenage boys dunking a young female teacher. However, I get that I’m not typical. I realise most teachers are more relaxed about it than me and so I am prepared to accept this kind of thing may go on. However, teachers must *freely* volunteer. It cannot be assumed. I’ve worked in places where it *was* assumed and I have pointed out very clearly that I won’t be participating. But I’m a very particular type of personality. Some teachers really won’t want to participate but will feel enormous social pressure to do so. Without a clear system of active consent, they will end up in a situation that makes them deeply uncomfortable and that is plainly wrong.

Our expectations of students has become so low that I am asked to spend 15 minutes of teaching time coaxing a student to come back after lunch (so I can build a relationship with them instead of senior staff dealing with it!) and they reluctantly return, I am applauded for that!

@margaretmckeow2 I do a lot of choral response with my Grade 3-4 class and I usually pick up which child doesn't respond correctly or is not speaking. Will admit, it took a few weeks to get attuned to it, but works really well now.

Uh, or you give kids a chance to hide in the crowd and try to imitate their peers. I don’t get how this helps surface misconceptions.

@MrZachG I am struggling with multiple strategies..The problem is the students are so confused with the multiple strategies that they can't master one at all! This year I have taught my 3-4s only the formal algorithm for Addition and each of the 26 in my class can actually add well!

Multiple strategies in math is pitched as am inclusive scaffold, when really they are just poor design. The teacher doesn’t have to bring kids to mastery on an efficient strategy. They can just model a few different ways to do stuff and then say, “use the method you like best.”

THIS!!! so so true. Will make it so much easier for teachers and students! I used maths textbooks in India all my schooling and I cannot tell you how easy it was to go back to the worked examples and understand what was going on when I was absent from school or did not understand
