100 economists--including some of the most famous on earth--call for dismantling the carbon economy as a crucial step towards rebuilding the planet. Investing in oil and gas is 'fundamentally incompatible with a stable future.' fal.cn/39CcW

One aspect of climate change that's not widely understood: the choice is global net-zero emissions or perpetually rising temps. We can mobilize & stay at 1.5° or delay & stay at 3-4°, but if we want to stabilize at *any* temp, gotta get to net-zero. Not if, just when.

The argument is simple: use recovery investment "not to restore the old world but to help create the new one." Will coronavirus halt or accelerate the transition to a clean energy economy? nyti.ms/2WeSq9a

Shutting down the entire global economy will produce about a 5% drop in GHG emissions. To hit the UN target of limiting temp rise to 1.5°C, global emissions would have to fall 7.6%. Every year. For decades. eenews.net/climatewire/20…

In coronavirus lockdown, nature bounces back – but for how long? That depends on the political pressure we put on our leaders. So far the biggest environmental change is in our perception of what is possible. theguardian.com/world/2020/apr… By me.

As the economic slow-down due to the coronavirus pandemic shutters industry, air pollution and carbon emissions are dropping. A lot of people have asked what this means for carbon emissions and climate change. Here is a short explainer. (thread)

“Holding warming to 2 C can limit the negative impact to one percent of global GDP per capita by 2100. But runaway climate change would crater that GDP figure by seven percent worldwide, and by 10.5 percent in the United States.” rollingstone.com/politics/polit…

While COVID-19 is playing out more quickly than the effects of global warming, the principle is the same: if you wait until you can see the impact, it is too late to stop it. e360.yale.edu/features/coron…
