🇸🇴 🇮🇱 As Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich celebrates a “strong partnership” with Somaliland’s president in Jerusalem today, new reporting from Drop Site reveals what may be driving the relationship: Israel’s search for a strategic foothold on the Red Sea.
According to three Somali officials, a former Somali security official, an EU security official, and a Somaliland official who spoke to Drop Site, Israel already has an intelligence presence at Somaliland’s Berbera International Airport.
Reports and regional officials suggest an Israeli military base near the Bab al-Mandab Strait is also under discussion. Such a base could give Israel a platform to project power against Yemen’s Ansarallah movement and increase its influence over one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints.
Somaliland, still unrecognized by every U.N. member state except Israel, appears willing to risk regional isolation in exchange for diplomatic recognition, while Somalia and neighboring countries warn the growing partnership could further destabilize the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region.

Journalist Hadi Hoteit said an Israeli drone stalked him as he drove alone in his car in the south of Lebanon today, with no other vehicles ahead of or behind him. He said he turned around in an attempt to avoid a strike, as it targeted him deliberately. According to the Press TV correspondent, the drone continued attacking the area even as people tried to rescue him.

🔹Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Sunday the U.S. will carry out more military operations against drug cartels and criminal organizations across Latin America, confirming on CBS’s Face the Nation that Americans “should expect” strikes in countries including Ecuador and Guatemala.
🔹He described a new “America’s Counter Cartel Coalition” formed with partner governments across Central and South America to “defeat and destroy” groups Washington designates as foreign terrorist organizations, casting it as a revival of the Monroe Doctrine: “We’re taking back control of our hemisphere.”
🔹The remarks followed Trump’s announcement that a U.S. strike killed Héctor Guerrero Flores, known as Niño Guerrero, the leader of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, on June 12 in Bolívar state. Trump and Venezuela’s government said the strike was a joint operation. The killing is part of a broader U.S. campaign that has killed more than 200 people in strikes on alleged drug boats.

🚨Lebanon’s Health Ministry said Israeli attacks have killed 45 people and wounded 149 over the past 48 hours.
