Despite spending time in Belgium and later France under quarantine and medical screening measures to ensure they had not contracted Ebola, not a single DR Congo supporter traveling from Kinshasa was granted a U.S. visa for the World Cup. Among them was Michel Nkuka Mboladinga, better known as “Lumumba,” an iconic Leopards supporter who became one of the most recognizable faces of AFCON 2025. Since the start of this tournament, we have been witnessing clear bias against African countries embedded in visa and immigration systems.

BBC just claimed this is Norway’s first World Cup finals goal since Rekdal scored against Brazil in 1998. This is of course incorrect, their last World Cup goal was Guro Reiten against Japan in 2023.

Before there were female referees at the World Cup, others were paving the way and dealing with far worse. When German referee Bibiana Steinhaus showed Karim Demirbay a red card, he told her she should stick to the kitchen. So she wrote it down in her report word for word. FIFA then suspended him for five matches and, as part of that punishment, made him officiate a women's football match. The right call on and off the pitch.

@RobHarris reddit.com/r/whatstheword… This is a reddit comment from like 10 years ago describing the game. A few perennially online Americans try inking it’s something else doesn’t make it so. It’s 100% the game that Aussies have played for decades.

🚨🗣️New: Thierry Henry reacts to the Brazil, Morocco, and Netherlands press conferences, where questions in Spanish were reportedly not permitted for Hakimi, Vinícius Jr., and Frenkie de Jong: “I have covered World Cups for years, and this situation makes absolutely no sense to me. You’re telling me a World Cup co-hosted by Mexico can stop journalists from asking questions in Spanish? That’s like hosting a Formula 1 race and banning cars from using their engines. We saw it with Hakimi. We saw it with Vinícius. Now we’re hearing similar stories involving Frenkie de Jong. The players understood the questions. The journalists spoke one of the most widely spoken languages on the planet. Yet somehow the language became the problem. Gianni Infantino talks about inclusion, diversity, and bringing football to everyone. Fine. Then explain this contradiction. How can FIFA celebrate diversity in every promotional video and then create headlines because Spanish journalists are being told to switch languages at a tournament hosted by Mexico? Spanish isn’t some obscure dialect spoken by a handful of people. It’s the language of hundreds of millions across the Americas and beyond. If a journalist from Mexico, Spain, Argentina, Colombia, or anywhere else asks a question in Spanish and the player understands it, why is football creating barriers where none existed? The irony is unbelievable. FIFA keeps telling us football belongs to everyone, but this controversy has many fans asking whether some voices are more welcome than others. Maybe there’s a logistical explanation. Maybe it’s a translation issue. But perception matters. And right now the perception is terrible. Because what fans are seeing is simple: a World Cup hosted partly by a Spanish-speaking nation, players who understand Spanish, journalists who speak Spanish, and officials telling them not to use Spanish. If that’s progress, somebody needs to explain it better. Because from the outside, it looks like football’s governing body is tripping over its own message.” “FIFA wanted a celebration of diversity. Instead, they’ve handed the internet a controversy that won’t stop being discussed.”

parallel with the Knicks' extraordinary penchant for magically rallying, coming-up-from-behind to triumph at virtually the last minute was the weirdly fascinating drama of "Wemby" on the court distinctive not only by his height but the thinness of his body which appeared, beside his teammates, almost pre-pubescent, lacking maturity. no matter where you looked, there was always "Wemby" charging about anticipating an opening to shove, push someone with a solid adult body with a baby-faced look of insouciance: "Who? Me? I' m just a kid."
The New York Times@nytimes

From @TheAthletic: Victor Wembanyama’s first NBA finals experience was tough and emotional. He left the court without shaking Knicks players’ hands after the Spurs lost. “It’s painful. But I’m not running away from that,” he said. nyti.ms/4xAgpiP

Stateside, a gas station. I drank a frozen blue beverage too quickly, and was struck down by a punishment this entire nation knows, and accepts, and has named. The drink is called a slush. Ice, sweetness, and a blue that does not occur in nature. The day was hot. I was thirsty. I drank like a soldier at a river. The pain arrived in my skull like a war horn. Behind the eyes. Above everything. Total. I gripped the roof of my car. I may have made a sound. "Brain freeze," said the cashier through the door, with no urgency whatsoever. It has a NAME. The affliction is so common it has a household name, like a cousin. "Tongue on the roof of your mouth," called a man at the pumps. He did not look over. He prescribed the remedy mid-pump, casually, the way one mentions weather. I pressed my tongue to the roof of my mouth. The war horn faded. The healer nodded at his pump, finished, and was gone in a Chevrolet. In my land, punishment follows crime by way of courts and seasons. Here, the sentence is instant. Drink with greed, and the ice strikes the mind directly. No trial. No appeal. Perfectly fair. And here is what moves me. EVERYONE has felt it. The cashier. The healer. Children. Elders. An entire nation united by the same small lightning, all taught the same cure, all passing it on to strangers at gas stations, free of charge. You cannot fully distrust a country once you know it shares one pain. The freeze does not punish thirst. It punishes haste. I finished the slush slowly, like a scholar. Blue tongue. Clear mind. Then at the door I forgot everything, drank deeply, and was struck down again. "Tongue, hon," said the cashier, without looking up. Discipline is a journey.

Pardon my ignorance as a Brit but I thought I was getting robbed by the waitress after they took my card behind their till at a restaurant. Turns out this is just what they do and then they make you sign the bill after. Apparently this is normal but I’ve never seen it anywhere

FIFA rejecting Haiti’s jersey’s for being “too political” while allowing Israel to play, & the US to host World Cup (while denying visas, restricting entrance, banning Iranian players from staying in country) is a selective, targeted invocation of their “neutrality” policies.
