#MofaUpdate🔔: 🇺🇬|🇩🇪The Germany–Uganda Coffee Origin Familiarisation Tour today continued to the eastern region of Uganda, with a visit to Kapchorwa District at Sera Wild Farm, owned by Mr. Bruno Katusiime, who is widely recognised for promoting organic farming practices on the slopes of Mount Elgon. During the visit, coffee roasters, investors, and coffee quality assurance professionals gained firsthand insight into Uganda’s sustainable coffee production systems, as well as the realities faced by smallholder farmers committed to organic agriculture. Discussions at the farm highlighted the innovative modern irrigation system established across the 50-acre model farm, alongside an integrated beekeeping initiative comprising nearly 1,000 beehives that support pollination and enhance coffee productivity. In his remarks, Mr. Bruno emphasised the advantages of Uganda’s fertile volcanic soils and favourable climatic conditions for the production of premium-quality coffee. He also noted several challenges affecting the sector, including difficult terrain, high production costs, limited processing infrastructure, and increasing competition in global markets.

The lake is believed to serve as a natural healing spot for animals, particularly wounded buffaloes that frequent its shores. During the boat ride, guided by Mr. Lawrence, the delegation explored the Kazinga Channel, a 40km natural waterway connecting Lake George and Lake Edward, with water flowing from Lake George to Lake Edward. The channel, with an average depth of about 4 metres, is renowned for its rich biodiversity, hosting numerous bird species such as kingfishers, African skimmers, gulls, pelicans, cormorants, and African fish eagles. He briefed the delegation on the Union’s journey since its establishment in 2008 with just 10 members, growing into a major cooperative representing over 20,000 smallholder farmers primarily producing Robusta coffee. He noted that the Union was formed to strengthen coffee marketing and has since expanded to employ over 100 workers, currently exporting up to 180 containers to markets such as Japan and Europe. The coffee laboratory and hulling factory, commissioned by Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in November 2022, plays a key role in value addition and quality assurance.

The meeting was presided over by the Minister of State for Finance, Planning and Economic Development (Investment and Privatisation), Hon. Evelyn Anite, was representing the Minister of Finance. She commended the delegation for their interest in Uganda’s coffee sector and broader economy, noting that such engagements are key to translating diplomatic ties into tangible development outcomes.
