I’ve heard from numerous people recently about how they were removed from NHS waiting lists without their knowledge due to a “failure to reply” to a letter from a hospital asking them to confirm they still wanted to be seen. In all cases, they say they never received the letter.

The Telegraph has reported that almost half of NHS hospitals are using advanced practitioners to cover doctors’ shifts. Some of these shifts would ordinarily be covered by doctors in the final years of specialty training; often the most senior doctor on site below consultant level. Every NHS colleague has an important role and should be valued. But different roles involve different training, responsibilities and limits. Medical rota gaps should not be quietly filled by blurring professional boundaries. This is a system-level concern. Patients should know who is treating them, what their role is, and whether they are being assessed by a doctor. That matters for consent and accountability. In 2025, 40,000 doctors applied for 10,000 NHS specialty training jobs. That means thousands of doctors who could be training to become specialist GPs, consultants were unable to progress because the number of posts is capped centrally by the Government. At the same time, 1,000 additional specialist training jobs that were due to enter the NHS pipeline were removed by Wes Streeting and Keir Starmer. So we now have a system where doctors are trying to train, hospitals are struggling to fill medical rotas, and patients are left with less clarity about who is providing their care. If the NHS does not have enough doctors on the rota, the answer is simple: train enough doctors, employ enough doctors, and give patients clarity about who is treating them. telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/05/0…

Will @alisonleary1 call out this blatant medical consultant substitution by nurse consultants who we have been repeatedly reassured are completing adjacent tasks and not delivering medical consultant grade care on medical consultants rotas? I think not.

Tony Benn’s 5 key questions: “What power have you got? Where did you get it from? In whose interests do you exercise it? To whom are you accountable? How do we get rid of you? And if you can’t get rid of the people who govern you, you don’t live in a democratic system.” 🎯

There have been some conversations around how ACPs are supposedly safer than PAs, and are better trained, and so can work at ST3 level even if PAs are <F1 level as per Leng. I thought it’d be useful to compare the ACP courses to the PA courses 1/

These results make one thing clear: Keir Starmer has fought his last election as Labour leader. We now need a timetable for an orderly transition to a new leader by the end of this year. This could not be more serious. It's about stopping Farage entering No.10 My new article👇

The result in Newcastle is utterly extraordinary. The Labour Party has won TWO SEATS out of 78 voting today. Just two years ago the Labour Party held 46 of 78 seats on the Council, a clear majority. 44 seats lost. Labour all but annihilated across the North East.

In 2023, the Labour Party blocked Jamie Driscoll standing the Labour candidate for North of Tyne mayor, getting factional revenge for Labour Together associate Nick Forbes, who Driscoll beat in 2019 on Momentum ticket to be selected as the Labour candidate for Mayor (which he then won). Driscoll was blocked in 2023 after sharing a stage with renowned socialist film maker, Ken Loach. Today Driscoll won his seat in Monument for the Greens and will likely play a key role in negotiating who will run Newcastle, most likely in a Green/Liberal Dem Coalition. All 78 Newcastle Council seats up for grab. So far 61 have been called. The Labour Party HAS NOT WON A SINGLE SEAT. This is where we see, most starkly, the results of the Labour Together project.
