Kenya Reaffirms Support for UN Reforms as Fifth Committee Meets in Nairobi Kenya has reiterated its commitment to a stronger, more inclusive United Nations as senior diplomats and officials from the UN General Assembly’s Fifth Committee convened in Nairobi to deliberate on governance, financing, and institutional reform. Speaking during the meeting, Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs Dr Korir SingOei underscored the pivotal role of the Fifth Committee in safeguarding the UN’s operational effectiveness. He noted that decisions on administrative and budgetary matters directly influence the organization’s capacity to deliver humanitarian assistance, advance development programmes, and sustain peace operations globally. Dr SingOei also highlighted the strategic significance of the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), the only UN headquarters located in the Global South. He described UNON as both a symbol and an operational anchor of geographical balance, particularly relevant in the context of ongoing global conflicts, humanitarian emergencies, and development challenges. Kenya is proud to have reached a historic milestone with the election of Judge Phoebe Okowa to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), making her the first Kenyan to serve on the court since its establishment in 1945. Her election to fill a mid-term vacancy reflects the strong confidence of UN Member States in her credentials, experience, and integrity. Her success reflects not only personal excellence, but also our nation’s continued commitment to contributing distinguished professionals to the multilateral system. Met and congratulated Judge Phoebe Okowa at State House, Nairobi, on her remarkable achievement, and reaffirmed the government’s unwavering support as she takes up this important international responsibility.

Plans are underway to develop a purpose-built African Union Campus in Nairobi, positioning Kenya as a central hub for AU coordination, shared services, and diplomatic engagement. I was briefed by Dr. Huyam Salih, Director of the African Union’s Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources, on the progress achieved in advancing plans for the construction of a new African Union Campus in Nairobi. The Government has allocated three acres in Upper Kabete to host the campus, which will bring together AU-IBAR, the AU Transition in Somalia, the Pan African University Institute for Basic Sciences, Technology and Innovation (PAUSTI), the AU Institute for Remittances (AIR), and the AU Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) Eastern Africa Regional Office and Centre of Excellence. Once completed, the campus will attract African expertise from across the continent, enrich Nairobi’s cultural diversity, and strengthen the city’s position as a leading hub for AU intervention, policy, and innovation.
