I had to let this handsome, goofy, squishy-face dog go over the rainbow bridge today. He was 14. We adopted him when he was 3. He'd been run over by a truck, had 2 surgeries to save a hind leg. But, he was a disney dog. Birds would land and take his floof to line their nests. He loved babies of any species. And he was my soul dog. Staying up with me through sleepness nights following diagnosis, surgery and treatment for cancer. Humans are not worthy.

When Marcus walked up the steps with the package, he saw Mr. Arthur, an 85-year-old veteran, sitting on a rusted lawn chair. Arthur was eating cold baked beans straight out of a tin can with a plastic spoon. He looked frail and freezing in the autumn wind. Marcus stopped. "Stove broken, sir?" Arthur looked down, ashamed. After his shift, Marcus went to Walmart. He bought a slow cooker and $50 worth of groceries. He drove back to Arthur's house at 9:00 PM. He plugged the slow cooker into a wall outlet in the living room and filled it with beef stew. "You survived a war, sir," Marcus whispered, handing him a hot bowl. "You shouldn't have to survive a cold dinner." Marcus now stops by every Tuesday to fill the pot. Respecting our elders means making sure they never go hungry in the dark. 🍲📦

When we rescued Kapei, a drought victim from Rombo, near Tsavo West, we knew there was a host of older elephants waiting to be his surrogate mum. And we were instantly proved right. He was adopted – not just by the Keepers, but by the entire herd as Murera, Sonje, and Quanza all argued over who got to be his mum. What we didn't count on was the retinue of wild-born babies that would be born soon after his arrival, giving him lots of little brothers and sisters to play with! Lenny, Sulwe, Zigi and Mwana are spirited little playmates, rounding out his adoptive family and providing lots of opportunities to learn how to interact with other elephants. As he grows older, Kapei will peel away from his female-led herd and join bachelor groups of boys in the wild, who are usually mentored by older bulls. When I went to the shelter that day, I knew I was going to save a life, but I didn’t expect that life to cling to me so tightly, so quickly. The moment I saw him, this German Shepherd with sad yet hopeful eyes, he chose me. He pressed his nose against the bars, wagged his tail softly, and at that moment, I knew—I couldn’t leave without him. The ride home should have been just a simple trip, but he had other plans. The moment the car started moving, he jumped onto the front seat, then onto me, wrapping his paws around my shoulders and resting his head on mine as if to make sure I wouldn’t disappear. As if he was saying, "You are my family now, and I will never let go." I could feel his heavy breathing, his heart racing against my back, but he wasn’t afraid. He was ready.
