📍HONDURAS 🕊️Last month marked the 10th anniversary of Indigenous defender Berta Cáceres' murder – a time to remind us of the importance of keeping her memory, strength and legacy alive. Finally, after 10 years of hope and tireless struggle for justice and for the Lenca people, international experts from the GIEI have shed light on the crime against Berta Cáceres. Her murder was not an isolated crime. It was the result of a power structure in which corporate interests, state security forces and international funding converged to impose the Agua Zarca hydroelectric project. For ten years she has been dedicated to the defense of trans women for the decriminalization of sex work. She is part of the Observatory of Hate Crimes Against LGBT People and has been a national consultant for the Global Network of Sex Work Projects (NSWP) in Europe on universal health coverage for trans women in Mexico. Despite facing repeated harassment and criminal prosecutions for her online posts and participation in peaceful assemblies - including feminist and LGBTQI+ rallies and protests -, she continues to defend equality and justice fearlessly. As the Advocacy Program Coordinator at the Social Policy, Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation Studies Association (SPoD), İris leads efforts to monitor human rights violations, build community-led protection, and push for inclusive policies for LGBTI+ people. 📍KYRGYZSTAN ✊ This week, woman human rights defender and journalist Makhabat Tazhibek Kyzy, director of Temirov Live and Ayt Ayt Dese—media initiatives that investigate corruption and raise awareness of human rights issues in Kyrgyzstan—was released from prison. She is awaiting a retrial, scheduled to begin on 7 April 2026, which was ordered by the Supreme Court of Kyrgyzstan on 10 March 2026. Tazhibek Kyzy had previously been sentenced to six years in prison on charges of so-called “calls for mass civil unrest.” While Front Line Defenders welcomes the Court’s decision to release Makhabat Tazhibek Kyzy, we continue to call on the authorities in Kyrgyzstan to immediately and unconditionally end all forms of persecution targeting her and to drop all charges against her. 🔗 Read more: frontlinedefenders.org/en/case/court-…
