“Did they get off?” Those words may not be recognizable to anyone, but to each and every Coast Guard member, they represent a true hero: Signalman 1st Class Douglas Munro, the service’s only Medal of Honor recipient. More than 75 years ago, those were the last words he said before his death at the Battle of Guadalcanal during World War II. Ask any Coast Guardsman or Marine about Douglas Munro and they might tell you about Sept. 27, 1942, when Munro gave his life so a detachment of Marines might live. In many ways, Munro’s sacrifice is at the very core of the close relationship between the two services. All who hear Munro’s story instantly understand the bond between American brothers and sisters in arms and the true meaning of service to nation. A month into the Guadalcanal campaign, then-Marine Lt. Col. Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller embarked three companies of U.S. Marines into landing craft to take control of the western region of the island. Munro, only 22-years-old, took control of 10 landing craft to move Puller’s men to the western coast. After successfully landing and moving 500 yards inland, Munro took all but one of the landing craft and returned to the staging area. Just an hour after landing on the western coast of the island, Marine forces were overcome by Japanese bombing raids, driving out their gunfire support. The Marines were being driven back to the beach and many did not have radios to request assistance. A single “HELP” spelled out in T-shirts on the ridge near the beach sent a loud and clear signal to those looking on. Back at the staging area, Munro volunteered to navigate the same landing craft to rescue the Marines from enemy fire. Nearing the beach and braving incoming fire, Munro directed the landing craft to push forward, even with Japanese forces gaining ground and nearing the beach. As the Marines re-embarked on the landing craft, Munro immediately navigated his vessel between the enemy fire and the Marine forces, providing much-needed cover for the Marines. With his efforts, all of the Marines, including the wounded, were safely taken off the island. Munro later help free a grounded landing craft that was full of Marines who were not far from enemy forces. At this same time, the Japanese forces began firing machine gun rounds and Munro was struck with a single bullet. He died before the forces returned to the staging area. In a letter dated just five days later, the commanding officer of the unit wrote to inform Munro’s parents of their son’s heroism and death. “Upon regaining consciousness his only question was ‘Did they get off?’, and so died with a smile on his face and the full knowledge that he had successfully accomplished a dangerous mission,” the letter said. More than 75 years later, Munro’s legacy lives on. He is remembered and honored by every member of the Coast Guard for his selfless devotion to duty and heroism. As Munro has become an inspiration for so many who have served in the Coast Guard for his sacrifice. Puller, one of the men he saved, would go on to become one of the most decorated members of the Marine Corps and inspire generations of service himself. For his sacrifice, Douglas Munro posthumously received the Medal of Honor, our nation’s highest military award– an award Puller himself nominated for Munro has honored Munro’s legacy throughout the past 75-plus years, including naming a 378-foot high-endurance cutter and the brand-new Coast Guard headquarters building for Munro.

On the night of January 15, 1978, Ted Bundy broke into the Chi Omega sorority house at Florida State University. In a brutal rampage, he murdered two young women, Margaret Bowman and Lisa Levy…and severely beat two others who survived. That same terrifying night, a priest, Fr. William Kerr (later Monsignor), was called to the sorority house to minister to the victims. One of the young women, still deeply shaken, spoke only to him. She shared that before leaving for college, she had promised her mother (or grandmother) that she would pray the Rosary every single night for protection, even if she fell asleep while praying it. She had kept that promise that night. She later expressed her belief that her nightly devotion to the Rosary had protected her amid the horror. Years later, the same priest, Monsignor Kerr, became a spiritual counselor to Ted Bundy while he was on death row. Bundy confessed to over 30 murders before his execution. He also related to Monsignor Kerr that when he attempted to enter the room of the girl with the rosary (unbeknownst to him), an “invisible force” pushed him back and despite repeated attempts to enter, could not. This story, though the exact details have grown through retellings over the years, reminds us of the deep faith many hold in the power of prayer, especially the Rosary. Father Joseph M. Esper reflects in his book With Mary to Jesus that the Rosary not only aids our spiritual growth but also “undermines the kingdom of Satan.” He quotes the famous Vatican exorcist Fr. Gabriele Amorth, who once heard the devil say during an exorcism: “Every Hail Mary is like a blow on my head. If Christians knew how powerful the Rosary was, it would be my end.” Whether in moments of visible danger or the hidden battles we all face, countless believers throughout history have turned to Our Lady’s Rosary as a source of strength and protection🙏🏻💪🏻

"Our poor dad was lying awake all night... too polite to say anything for fear of offending." These words from Claire Healy are haunting. Matthew Healy was 88 years old, a "warm and sincere presence," and he was left unprotected in a place where he should have been safest. While the perpetrator was clearly in a state of medical crisis, the real failure lies with the hospital system that placed a patient experiencing violent delirium in a room with vulnerable elderly men. We must do better for older people. Rest in peace, Matthew. #MatthewHealy #MercyHospital #Safeguarding #Brokensystem echolive.ie/corknews/arid-…

In 1954, a U.S. Air Force B-57B Canberra captured footage of Castle Bravo — the most powerful nuclear test ever conducted by the United States. The detonation at Bikini Atoll yielded 15 megatons, 1,000× stronger than Hiroshima.

This Lone Ranger Atomic Bomb ring was distributed by Kix cereal in the late 40's, for 15 cents and a mail-in box top. It was actually a spinthariscope containing radioactive Polonium-210 (one of the most toxic substances out there). A child would take the toy into a pitch-black room, remove the tail cap from the 'bomb', and look through a tiny lens to see flashes of light from the Polonium-210 atoms decaying into Lead-206.

On 23rd November 2023 Ireland was thrown into a state of collective shock after one of the worst crimes in the history of our country. An Algerian migrant named Riad Bouchaker approached a school in Dublin and stabbed 3 young children. He is charged with : - Attempted murder of two girls and one boy. - Assault causing harm to a care worker. - 3 more counts of assault causing harm to 2 other children and a passer-by. - One count of production of a knife. Defence psychiatrists had argued Bouchaker was unfit to stand trial because of a 'brain injury' he received on the day of the attack. A number of men including Irish man Warren Donohue and young French man Alan Loren-Guille immediately jumped into action to stop the violent attack and the defence claimed Bouchaker suffered a brain injury as a result. But the judge said the video footage of interviews between Bouchaker and Gardaí in the aftermath of the attack was more persuasive and therefore ruled he is fit to stand trial. The trial begins on the 8th of June.

You won’t believe this. I didn’t. But it is true. In Aarhus, Denmark a 37 year old woman met a migrant in a bar and ended up imprisoned in a flat where she was subjected to a gang rape by three men for 6 hours. One of the men (an Eritrean national) was caught and deported. The other two Eritrean nationals were being actively hunted and Denmark put out an international appeal with their names and photos. The men (Awedin Fikak and Henok Tekleab) fled to France and then took small boats to the UK. They gave their real names and were given food, accommodation and support by the UK government. No checks were done against an international database which would have shown their status as suspected rapists wanted in Denmark. They lived off taxpayer money in the UK for 18 months until it was brought to light that they were wanted criminals. They have now been deported to Denmark to face the justice system. The whole system is farcical. Nobody thought that Eritreans, a nation where 65% of women say they are raped, would be suitable for European integration.

13 years ago, Captain Sara Knutson Cullen flew her UH-60 Black Hawk through a storm over Kandahar, Afghanistan, on what began as a routine training mission. Sara was 27 and a skilled pilot. She graduated from West Point in 2007 and joined the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade from Hunter Army Airfield in Georgia. She had just married Chris Cullen, a former Army pilot, who followed her to Afghanistan as a civilian contractor to stay close to her. During heavy rain, the helicopter went down, taking Sara and four other soldiers with it. Her family in Eldersburg, Maryland, received the news that would change their lives forever. Chris faced the impossible passing of his wife in the same place they had hoped to find some peace. Sara’s story is about more than the loss. She chose service over comfort, flying missions that helped protect her fellow soldiers. Friends and comrades remember her as calm, steady, and dedicated. Her dreams of family life with Chris were never realized, but her courage and commitment left a lasting mark. Today, her sacrifice reminds us of the cost of freedom and the strength of those who serve. Her memory continues to inspire.
