Bullshit. There's absolutely no evidence. This is a classic case of 'Public relations crisis management tactic', which is designed to push a narrative to get the fans or people against the hiring of Essiedu to feel sympathy or accept it. We do not accept him as Snape. Period.

It’s maddening because there are plenty of characters where their background and ethnicity are vague enough to play with meaningfully. But Snape is not one of them. And by changing his race you structurally manipulate his experience and challenges throughout the foundation of the narrative therefore remaking it to resemble something that was not there in the book.

OPINION: Black Snape will become the poster child for the institutionalized racism movement. The one that tells them "we can get away with this shit forever." He will be their crown jewel, their Moby Dick, their biggest “gotcha” moment. To them, he will be their biggest soul-taker. He will piss off more fans than any other casting choice in history. And in fact, the African actor might even do a competent job: BUT HE'LL NEVER BE SNAPE. Because from 2001 to 2011, across all EIGHT Harry Potter films, Warner's told us they knew what Snape looked like. They were FINE with everybody being WHITE ONLY. They told us they RESPECTED the books AND the fans. So to make Snape black NOW can only be to piss off the white fans that made the franchise successful in the first place... ...and to further push the whole "WHITE PEOPLE ARE RACIST" narrative. And again: IT. WONT. WORK. They've UNWHITED Snow White, Captain America, Ariel, Ironheart, Doctor Who and Wonder Man. All 5 flopped because white people said WTF? - and black people didn't show up either. I'll watch just to see how insulting the show is. But knowing it's HBO, I really don't expect to make it past the first episode. And the way they light scenes these days, I probably won't even see him.
